Tom,

Not all Protestants have good sense or respect either. To your main point I fully agree.

Yes, I agree. Yet, if one were to wacth Protestants go to service on Sundays, they usually see far more well dressed people, then those attending the Mass. It is not due to a lack of means, it is an attitude difference.

I find it amazing that our separated brethren in Protestant Churches who do even follow the real faith have more sense to dress well, then do most Catholics who have the real faith at their finger tips. Amazing.
I believe they follow their faith…and its real…not the fullness of the Catholic church but they have faith.

So, what would you have someone do…if they can’t wear regular dress shoes…not go to Mass?

I 'll leave it to Christ to judge me …

They have faith, they love Christ, but they love Him through a false religion, a religion started by revolutionaries, not God.

If a person does not have the financial means to wear nice clothes, then of course they are giving what they can. If, however, a person can dress nicely and chooses not to, that is a reflection on their lack of respect and love for Christ.

Of course God will judge you, no-one else can judge your soul. However, we MUST judge actions in this life, and people who choose to dress down for our Lord are not showing love and respect for Him, imo.

Why must we judge actions in this life?

Is murder wrong?

How about abortion?

How about homosexual acts?

How about adultery?

How about stealing?

If we do not judge actions, we will have utter chaos. Further, The Bible tells us we are to admonish the sinner, we cannot do that unless we judge the sinful action first.

I think there may be something in this about where you believe God is with you.

God is present in the Eucharist, so of course you meet him there. And yes, you meet God in a very special way in the Eucharist.

I also meet God in the mountains. I meet God on the street. I had a wonderful walk with Jesus on the beach last week. I meet God in every human being I ever meet.

Yes, I dress up to go to weddings. But my friend who’s getting married in a couple of weeks is also coming to visit tonight, and I’ll be wearing jeans and trainers.

If I was meeting the Pope, I’d probably dress up, but I sincerely hope his best friends call in on him wearing their open toed sandals.

When I go to receive Eucharist, I go to meet my best friend, my closest friend, the one who knows me intimately. Sometimes I’ll be dressed up for the occassion, sometimes I won’t. But if my human friends understand the difference, I’m sure Jesus gets it too.

My friends don’t believe that how I dress reflects how seriously I take them - nor do I. What matters is how I treat them, how I listen, and how attentive I am. They know how I feel about them, I know how I feel about them, and what I’m wearing simply isn’t a big deal.

Now, if it was my boss, or someone I was scared of, or someone I’d know would make a judgement purely on appearance, then I’d wear my suit. But I’d probably feel so self conscious that I wouldn’t feel comfortable, and I certainly wouldn’t feel I was being myself…

Then put your words into action–don’t be a hypocrite. The next wedding you attend, wear jeans and a t-shirt. The next time you have an important meeting wear shorts. The next time you attend a wake or funeral, forget to shave and show-up in stained jeans and shirt. The next time you need to go on an important assigment of interview with an important person, wear old pants with holes in them and don’t bother to comb your hair.

Then see how those people “understand” you and and accept you. If you cannot care enough to give your very best, then that is a statement of where your heart is.

What exactly would a person like you do if your Priest started strongly asking for more appropriate attire at Mass (which will be coming in the future to a Parish near you)? Would you obey, ignore and continue to dress bad, ot just laugh him off?

This entire: Jesus just loves me no matter what **** is laughable.

All I know, friends, is that I would not go to God’s house, unless I were there to mop the floors, wearing anything less than the best I had. Even when I was a pastor of a UM church I would not even approach the altar with a sense of carelessness. I wouldn’t even touch the altar without asking God to cleanse me of all unrighteousness and make me worthy to approach His altar.

I remember preaching in a black church knowing that many of the people were very poor and marvelling at how well the people dressed, including the children. They dressed this way because they respected the Lord and wished to show there respect to Him and for Him. It made me wisht to continue to do the same.

Even now I’m not rich by any means but I do have a suit and a sport coat and ties and I wear them.

But Tom. He does!
No, He does not force His love upon those who are separated from Him. That is a modern twist of the faith that is simply false. If we choose to not love Christ, He will not force us to be with Him. Yours is a false Protestant mentality born of a modern and fallen culture that thinks all one has to do is say they love Jesus. It is ridiculous.

I cannot even believe how many people are arguing that it is wrong to dress down to Mass…it is scarecly a wonder why the faith is in such a huge world of hurt.

I’m truely sorry you feel that way. May God bless you.

Jesus DOES love those who are separated from Him. He desires in every way to have each and every soul united with Him.
He, of course, doesn’t force His love on us… but He certainly still loves everyone.

There is a nice young boy who is a regularly altar server in our church though sometimes he is forgetful. A few Sundays ago he forgot to wear his dress shoes but wore his sneakers instead. I found out quickly why he is such a good boy. When his father noticed that he was wearing sneakers instead of dress shoes he would not let him serve that day. He has since always remembered to wear his dress shoes. I thank God for that good father and look forward to this boy growing up to be a good man.

I pray that all fathers will some day take such responsibility for their children.
