Laws forcing schools to stage a daily Christian assembly should be scrapped because children should not be “coerced” into religion, according to a head teachers’ leader.

But the move will be strongly resisted by the Church of England and Roman Catholic Church.

A CofE spokesman said: “To get rid of the act of worship is to deny children the opportunity to experience something they wouldn’t experience elsewhere in their lives.”

Suposedly it’s due to timetabling:

The rules have long been criticised by teachers’ leaders who claim schools struggle to accommodate them into increasingly squeezed timetables.

The letter, which is signed by groups including the National Union of Teachers,** the British Humanist Association, British Muslims for Secular Democracy and the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches**, calls on Mr Gove to scrap the laws as part of a forthcoming Education White Paper.

So it’s not a time table problem. They’re just against Christian worship in schools all together.

Who proposed it? The secular groups or the National Union of Teachers?
Could it be that the original people who proposed it really are concerned with timetables- and the other groups who have since gotten involved feel that it furthers their own cause?
