My youngest daughter graduated from Ohio State University last May. We just found out she was accepted to the University of Miami School of Law! Hello sunshine! Our oldest daughter already has her Master’s Degree from the University of Alabama. God has truly blessed our family! It’s always nice to post good news in a hectic world.

I also graduated frOm the University of Miami School of Law and proud to be an UM alumni and hurricane fan 😃 congratulations to your daughter! Law school is a lot of work and I really mean it but if you do your work it will be OK. I wish your daughter the best and lots of success.

My lawyer hubby also got his undergrad degree from THE Ohio State University. He is your typical Type-A personality trial lawyer, and he loves every second of it.

Law school can be big time stressful. Best of luck to your daughter.

Congrats!! I don’t know what type of law she is interested in, but I was recently listening to Catholic radio and I heard about the Thomas More Law Center. They do a lot to defend religious liberty. Perhaps they have internships for law students that she should consider.

There is that, as well as the Beckett Fund for Religious Liberty.

Beckett is representing the Little Sisters, Hobby Lobby, Ave Maria, EWTN, etc., on the HHS mandate.

One of my ND Law School classmates works there and loves his job.

I went to a drama competition at Miami when I was in high school. I remember a huge area by the student center (?) filled with green and orange chaise lounge chairs for sunning. It was…interesting.

I ultimately decided to go north and be a Gator. The closest thing was a big field by the Rietz Union.

Good luck to your daughter.

So, a Buckeye wife and a Cane alum chimed in on the post. Thanks! She’s worried about having both decals on her rear window after the 2002 NCAA national championship game…

I also want to thank every one else who posted their congratulations. Both my daughters have done well. The oldest received her BS and MPA from the University of Alabama and now I have an OSU Buckeye heading to law school at “The U”. I’ve been a lawyer since 1985 and never thought either of my daughters would follow suit. I can’t say I warned her!

God bless you! I hope everyone enjoys good news to share with us at CA!

Dave

Congratulations! Is this a top tier law school? You might want to ask the law school how many of its recent graduates are employed as LAWYERS full time within a year of graduating. That is an important piece of info since there has been a huge downturn in the employment of lawyers the past few years. Law school is very expensive and you need to know that there will be a job at the end of it.

I believe UM is ranked 69th by U.S. News & World Report. If you want to practice law in Miami, as she does, the word is that UM is the school of choice. She received a $47,000 scholarship offer already from FIU. Miami sends their offers approximately three weeks after acceptance, so we are still waiting with fingers crossed.

I agree that the U.S. is currently going through a bubble in attorney employment. Law school applications and enrollment have declined steadily over the past three years. Most experts expect the decline to continue for at least one more admissions cycle before things improve.

Hi!

First, I want to say congrats to your daughter and your family! I would like to ask you some very honest questions. You see, I’m an undergraduate finishing up my degree with an interest to pursue a law degree in hopes of working in the legal field. Yet I have heard many things that from the far MAJORITY of lawyers are depressed and if they had a second chance to do it all over again, they would chose differently. Along with the fact that law school is very expensive and that the legal field looks pretty bleak at the moment.

So, I must ask: Do you love your work in the legal field? Do you have any regrets? How did your daughter come to see all this?

I’m wish to address this questions since they seem to be the most obvious worth asking. I wish to be a lawyer for the right reasons as anyone came to chose this profession: to make a difference in others’ lives for the better and the sake of justice itself as corny as it sounds but as you see, I’m conflicted if I will be able make the right choice here.

Congratulations to your daughter! It is pretty tough out there for law school graduates these days. But, one area that really is in need of good young attorneys is estate planning. For whatever reason, not that many talented young attorneys are going into this field (I guess the glamour of being the next Atticus Finch or doing a big corporate deal on wall street gets most of the attention).

Anyway, University of Miami has an excellent estate planning program (they put on the annual Heckerling conference for estate planners, that I went to this past year). If she has any interest in financial planning, working with individuals and families, and tax law, it is definitely worth looking into. There are good job prospects and fairly family friendly (wow, that was quite the alliteration) hours.

Cheers! 🙂

No, I have no regrets. I’ve been an Army Judge Advocate, Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, and a GSA Litigation Attorney. I currently have my own criminal defense practice in Washington, DC. The law has been good to me.

There are hiring slumps in many fields. Law school applications and matriculation have declined over the past several years, but I believe the correction will end within the next two years. There are law jobs available. You should do what you want to do in life. If law if your choice, go for it. Be prepared for the competition.
