I was recently received into the lay Dominicans as a postulant. I was drawn into it by Bl. Margaret of Castello (also a lay Dominican), who intervened in my life in quite a dramatic way. (Here’s the story.) She and St. Thomas More are the patrons of my Dominican vocation (even though S.T.M. did consider joining the Franciscans).

Are there any other third-order Dominicans out there (especially lawyers)? How did you get drawn into the order?

I too have recently been strongly interested in postulating to the Third Order of Saint Dominic.

I am trying to clear my schedule of a few other Church activities.

What is your postulancy going to be like?

Take care,

Scapular

Well, I’ll go to the chapter meetings, try as best I can to adhere to the rule (which is tough with my new job), study more (also tough), attend functions when I can, and generally see how good a fit the Dominican life is. Our chapter is quite laid back and doesn’t stand on ceremony (though obviously your privileges within the order are limited during your year of inquiry), and I am not treated like a little kid or a second-class citizen or anything. During your first year, there is training on the rule and on various activities like praying the Divine Office.

We open our chapter meetings by praying the Rosary. Then we eat pot luck; at our meeting today, we listened to meditations on the Mysteries of the Rosary while we ate. Then members of the chapter give 20-minute talks on various subjects pertinent to the Dominican life and Dominican history. Because Bl. Margaret of Castello made such a splash in my life, I have been asked to give a series of talks about her, starting next month.

Since we are the Order of Preachers, apologetics is a big part of our mission, so it’s necessary to study and be well-versed in the faith. Also, devotion to the Rosary is a big deal, since the Rosary was one of St. Dominic’s chief weapons against the powers of Hell.
