Of course a lay person can do this, they do it all the time. This person just did it at Mass. That doesn’t mean it is right.
My parish coordinator can act like a priest if she wants, heck she laid hands on someone last Sunday. Plenty of people insult Christ and His Priesthood in many ways, I see it all the time.

A person can tackle Pope Benedict and start to punch him, it would be wrong and something to stop, even with force.

In the same way, no matter how well spoken or well done is the talk given by the lay person, this is against the rules and should be stopped.

This is profoundly wrong and an insult to the Priesthood of Christ. As someone else suggested, if this person can write well, then maybe they can help the Priest write the Homily. Other than that, they belong primarily in the pews offering up their sacrifice in union with the Priest, not blurring the lines between the Ministerial Priesthood and the common Priesthood.

That does not justify having a layman “preach a homily” during the Mass. You have the two priesthoods very much confused. One is an ordained, ministerial priesthood. The other is the common priesthood that we share in Baptism.

Furthermore, the ministerial priesthood is a special calling from Jesus to serve Him in Holy Orders. There is a vastly huge difference, Matthew. In our common priesthood, we cannot confect the Eucharist, absolve sins nor annoint anyone. In other words, to us is not given the gift of bestowing the sacraments.

I agree we are a royal priesthood, but we are not Protestants, we recognize the Priesthood instituted by Christ also.
So not only are we a Royal Priesthood, which gives us the ability to baptize, to witness Christ and to serve Him, we are blessed with the Holy Ministerial Priesthood of Christ which we should honor and respect.
By blurring the lines between the common royal priesthood, we diminish the actions of Christ in instituting a Ministerial Priesthood and in doing so, insult the actions of Jesus as being not important enough to honor and respect.

One need only read OT Numbers about the wrath of Korah on those who attempted to usurp the ministerial duties… they were slaughtered.
And then in Jude we are warned again not to invite the wrath of Korah.

If more were aware of this, perhaps the last 40 years would have been less “eventful”

Somehow I knew this would result in the type of arguing that is now taking place and it is not what I intended. I was looking for some good info (which some of you provided - thank you). However, postings like “that is wrong” or “the parish should have a deacon” is really not worth posting. Perhaps CAF should adopt some sort of posting guidelines (maybe this already exists). I find that this forum gets so cluttered with banter that it is almost useless. But enough ranting, back to the topic.

My perspective (which I originally kept silent about) remains unchanged . I would not partake in this activity if I were asked to do so. However, unless someone clearly shows me something (neither your own words nor bolding my OP count) which explicitly prohibits what Matthew described, then I do not feel compelled to raise the issue.
