While it is rare it is possible to be an instituted lector without it being a step to ordination. What is the purpose of a instituted lector, as a stable ministry, if they are no different then a commissioned reader? Why have a specific liturgical rite of institution with specific blessings if either is fine?

I’m not arguing, but just trying to understand. If there is no preference for an instituted lector then why did Blessed Paul VI think it important to retain them?

Then we shall agree to disagree - I think a cleric is always more appropriate in those situations. But we’ve been told we are in the “Age of the laity,” so… 🤷

In reference to another post you made: I’ve always been curious why a deacon would attend a daily Mass in the OF and not function in his office. I have seen this on several occasions and always found it puzzling. Is there an instruction that states deacons are only to be used in certain situations?

I thought that a priest had to celebrate Mass every day, even when on vacation? Or are you referring to a priest who may have celebrated Mass already (privately) and then simply attends a public mass later?

No, priests don’t have to celebrate Mass every day, though they are encouraged to do so.
Can. 904 Remembering always that in the mystery of the eucharistic sacrifice the work of redemption is exercised continually, priests are to celebrate frequently; indeed, daily celebration is recommended earnestly since, even if the faithful cannot be present, it is the act of Christ and the Church in which priests fulfill their principal function.
