The Pope suggested that the current challenges are proof of "the decisive importance of the Catholic laity for the advancement of the Church's mission in today's rapidly changing social context."

The message cited what the Holy Father told a group of US bishops in Rome earlier this year, that "the demands of the new evangelization and the defense of the Church's freedom in our day call for 'an engaged, articulate and well-formed Catholic laity endowed with a strong critical sense vis-a-vis the dominant culture and with the courage to counter a reductive secularism which would delegitimize the Church's participation in public debate about the issues which are determining the future of American society.'"

In this context, the Pontiff called on the Knights of Columbus to "reinforce the praiseworthy programs of continuing catechetical and spiritual formation which have long been a hallmark of your Order."

"Each Knight," he said, "in fidelity to his baptismal promises, is pledged to bear daily witness, however quiet and unassuming, to his faith in Christ, his love of the Church and his commitment to the spread of God's Kingdom in this world." (underlining is mine)

May we be faithful to grace today in carrying out our mission as lay persons. Let us also pray for the Pope and all clergy today on the Feast of St. John Mary Vianney, Patron of parish priests, that they too be faithful to their vocations to Christ’s priesthood.

The New Evangelization must be shared by both Clergy and Laity! Both need to become more involved in the Faith Formation of the present young adult and mature adult Catholic population. Too many Catholics do not know their faith! How can we give what we do not have ?

ohhh, there’s a body blow. I haven’t even found out where and when the local knights meet since leaving the Army…and I don’t think I have my newest membership card…oh dear…

Thanks for your reply. I hope you will renew your membership. You can call your Parish Office for contact information for the Knights in your area, or you may even be able to search online.

My purpose in posting this thread, however, is to help all of us “wake up” to the urgency of our Catholic lay mission in the world today! We have the “fullness of Truth” in the Catholic Church, but how many are like the disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane – too sleepy to pray and be one with Jesus in His Love for souls?

Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of Your faithful, kindle in us, the Fire of Your Love.
