Hey guys,

Ive JUST began looking into joining a Third order and I tend to be drawn towards to Franciscans & Dominicans, more so the latter. I also be looking into the Benedictines and Carmelites…

I know there are differences between religious orders on what they do, but being a lay member to an order what would you do?

Apart from monthly meetings, Is there ever organised events?

Do you ever work with the 1st & 2nd orders?

What else once your in the order or beginning to enter are you involed in?

I live in England by the way!

Anyone help is appreciated,

Thanks & God bless.

Tony.

There are many posts you can pull up on this site about 3rd orders. As a secular franciscan (new word for 3rd order) i found that most members were already involved in ministry of some sort-reader, communion minster, soup kitchen volunteer etc. A third order gives you some spirituality to go along with your chosen ministries. Franciscans especially are involved in helping the poor-our local order especially helps a homeless shelter and food pantry.

Tony, follow this link to information about the various Secular (Third) Orders:

The activity outside of the regular monthly meeting time will vary from Order to Order and from Community to Community within each Order. If there are local Communties for you to visit, I suggest getting in contact with the ones that interest you and perhaps visiting a meeting.

Here is the home page for the Discalced Carmelites in England:

God bless you in your discernment.
