Lay sermons permitted, Vatican tells Swiss bishops

They are introducing all these abuses in hopes that Rome accepts them. It’s just actly how Michael Davies made the point in Time Bombs of Vatican II regarding extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, etc. coming about because of the legalization of abuse.

TNT, I agree about the laity fighting. Here in Orlando, the bishop is going to celebrate Easter Mass on March 1st! Talk about pulling a Cardinal Mahoney on us. I don’t care if the Mass is for TV! Easter Sunday is not March 1st! One does not satisify Sunday obligation by watching tv Mass. I told them point blank on the website it says no one is to have a “vigil” before Easter Saturday at 7:00 PM and here you are doing the opposite. Then I made some comment about Bishop Williamson and his analogy of asking what 4*X is up to 20 is and having mistakes along the way. I don’t think that went too well with the communications office since I didn’t receive a reply after that comment. :eek:

  1. The Tablet is a Progressive Cath paper. Similar to Our Sunday Visitor in the USA.
  2. The Tablet’s original story quoted the the synod’s Spokesman, General Secretary. Here is the quote:
    The general secretary of the Swiss bishops’ conference, Agnell Rickenmann, said that the two declarations were partly a response to the shortage of priests in Switzerland, but also reflected the Swiss Church’s “independence”. He said: “In Switzerland we have a 30-year tradition of theologically trained lay people active in the Church.”
  3. The Cathnews.com does NOT quote the spokesman…why not??
  4. The Cathnew.com quotes another publication, the Austrian KATHnews.net as follows:
    “However, in an update to our earlier posting on this site, the Austrian Kath.net news service - which had a journalist at the press conference - directly contradicts The Tablet.”
It says: "[Bishop] Grab of Chur stressed during the press conference, that *“no priest shall be hindered to preach, and that no lay people are allowed to give a homily.”

The mis-reporting also occurred in a number of other publications.

Now, how likely is it that the General Secretary and a bishop say just the opposite at the SAME press conference? Ok, in VATII church, that is entirely probable, to keep people cross-wired…for now.
Why are other publications called “mis-reporting”?
The Cathnews.com did NOT use any quote from the General Secretary to refute the other publications, but only the bishop.
I’ll make a friendly bet:
The lay people WILL give the sermons just as the Tablet and the other publications said…We’ll see.
 
In my previous post, I included a link to the KATH.net article. In it, the terms “homily”, “sermon”, “preach” and “meditation” are used as if they were different. They could hold different meanings, but in the contest of the mass I would say they are all the same thing.

Bishop Grab does state the obvious, that is, that only a priest can give a homily. But, his documents contradict this, stating that people other than priests can preach in place of the priest where the homily would have otherwise been. The only stipulations are that the preacher must be a degreed theologian and the priest must agree to give up his homily duties.

The full KATH.net article is long, but it is worth the read just to get an idea for the kind of wordsmithing and deception that gets employed by these groups.

I hope I’m wrong, but my guess is the scandal will play out like this:
  1. The Swiss Bishops make their statements (as we’ve seen already)
  2. Catholics just trying to be faithful to the Church will react with confusion and/or anger, claiming the Swiss should be condemned for their novelty
  3. Strong statements about the importance of the Priest alone giving the Homily will be presented by many (on these boards and in the Blogosphere at large), with continued condemnation of the Swiss Bishops
  4. The Curia will clarify that while it IS ok, it’s only for emergencies. More hand wringing and gnashing of teeth from the internet
  5. The Pope will issue a pastoral letter approving the use of Lay preachers, saying something about “lay genius”
  6. Some Catholics online will immediately twist themselves into pretzels justifying the “now approved” practice, using tortured logic and verbal gymnastics to claim that since the Pope said it, it MUST be “traditional.”
  7. Catholics who continue to condemn this novel scandal will be called “integrist, lidless-eyed freaks” for opposing the “spirit of Vatican II.”

Either you have never read National Catholic Reporter - which is a “progressive” paper, or you are comparing Our Sunday Visitor to the Wanderer.

Our Sunday Visitor is true to the Magisterium. That is not what I define as “progressive”.
