LDS Alaska Mission President says missionaries do not proselytize members of other religions!

Politely asking…what does “we take care of our own” mean? Do the missionaries only take care of LDS families? What if families of other religions need help? Do they also shovel snow for them?

It means that we have a really good welfare system; we do not require that our young men and women go out for two years and do nothing but service missions for members of the church. This time is for proselyting…for evangilism. Service (community and church…) fills up the rest of our lives, and our older members often go on missions that revolve only about service.

I had a couple of very good friends just return from a mission in South America; they were in charge of the church wheelchair program down there–dealing with several nations, they were aranging for and delivering wheelchairs for those children and adults (LDS or not) who needed them, but couldn’t afford them.

That’s one example. Another couple I know about spent two years (also in South America) teaching agricultural methods to people who had been doing slash and burn farming in the rainforests; these two showed people how to maximize their farming without destroying the forest. Another couple was called to set up schools. My husband and I were hoping to serve one, but that didn’t work out. Still…that’s the sort of thing our service missionaries do.

:shrug:The Mormon missionaries that came around a couple of years back shoveled my snow.
They were actually a refreshing change from the JWs, who insist on sending out the rudest, most obnoxious people I have ever had the misfortune to meet. (What kind of a :rolleyes:macadamia] meets someone on the way down her front steps & tries block her path & all but drag her back in the house again?? Jehovah :mad:Witnesses).

I disagree with Mormons at least as much as anybody, but they do at least give their missionaries some training in Good Manners 101, before they send them out…Not try to beat it into our heads in the middle of the bluidy sidewalk.

Campeador, are you serious

Isn’t it the duty of any faithful Christian to try to save the souls of their neighbors and family?
Shouldn’t Catholics try to redeem the souls of the lapsed or never-been Catholics?
Capeador,
It is considered rude to completely ignore sincere questions.

For your Q, we have answered you several times. If you feel we missed the mark, it is your responsibility redefine your question more clearly.
Personally, I won’t respond until you answer my questions

I don’t know the answer to your questions. I was asking my questions because I’d like to know the answers. If you don’t know the answer just say so. No need to be rude.

Because we think we are right. We think we have something very special to share. We believe that we have the priesthood authority and the restored gospel, and want to see everybody have it.

That’s why.
My wife and I just yesterday returned from a vacation to the Salt Lake City area during which we toured Temple Square. Upon entering the gate of the square we were met by a couple of young LDS ladies who asked if we would like to be escorted and/or would like to know more about their church, we said no thank you and were left alone. That indicates to me both a level of evangelizing we Catholics should consider carefully and a level of politeness that is very refreshing, we were after all on what is perhaps their most sacred property. There were I’d estimate six to eight legalization teams available around the square, strangely they were predominantly young ladies.

The displays and information available in the two visitor centers definitely portrayed a join us and be saved attitude but I did not sense any put down of other religions.

Todd, Catholic missionary work is to teach the Good News of Jesus Christ to non-Christians.

Ecumenism is sought between Christians.

Catholics don’t proselytize, anyone. We do evangelize, and yes, there are Catholic missions in Utah. Why do you ask?
I was making a joke

And I think you are splitting hairs that can’t be split

**Proselytize **def: to try to convert somebody to a religious faith or political doctrine
**Evangelize **def: to convert somebody or the people of an area to Christianity, especially by preaching or missionary work

And I never unerstood why

Proselytizing usually involves going door to door, knocking on them. This is a distinct activity of Mormons and JWs. I don’t know of any Christian missions who are doing this. Christian missions exist first to serve, which is teaching what Christ taught us: to love our neighbor.

Hi Rebecca, I don’t think formal definitions support your deliniation.
And no, I’m not disagreeing on the methods employed by LDS vs. RCC

I always wondered why Catholics were so weak on proactive evangelism. I was taught to behave as a christian but never to bring people to the faith.

Will all be saved?
All will be saved who follow Christ. Christ said it best, If they are born of water and born of the Spirit they will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

This is believed by Catholics and Mormons alike; is there a problem?

So, LDS do try to proselytize other Christians?

Why?
It is best to admit that Catholics also evangelize anywhere and everywhere. We evangelize to Anglicans, Easter Orthodox, Baptists, and even Mormons. We proselytize to them because we want them to be part of the One, Holy, and Apostolic Church.

I assume Mormons want the same thing; they also believe they have the one true church.

Do you actually think Catholics do not evangelize other Christians? If you do, please tell me why the vast majority of all adult RICA are other Christians.

I think as another editor stated, let’s be honest. The pot does not call the kettle black; particularly when there are many more things in the pot to discuss.

I could be wrong but I suspect it has much to do with status in the community at this point. Whenever there’s a problem, people run to the church.
