When Jesus taught about marriage, his disciples suggested it would be better not to marry: “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” Jesus affirmed that it is better not to marry, but that this singleness is a gift given only to some: “There are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.” St. Paul taught the same, that it is better not to marry, but that each should live according to the gift he or she is given, whether marriage or celibacy: “I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has a particular gift from God, one having one kind and another a different kind. To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is well for them to remain unmarried as I am. But if they are not practicing self-control, they should marry… Let each of you lead the life that the Lord has assigned, to which God called you… The unmarried man is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to please the Lord; but the married man is anxious about the affairs of the world, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided. And the unmarried woman and the virgin are anxious about the affairs of the Lord, so that they may be holy in body and spirit; but the married woman is anxious about the affairs of the world, how to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord… he who marries his betrothed does well; and he who refrains from marriage does better.”why don’t we all give up being married if that equals serving god and his purposes.
Which the celibate are able to fulfill in an even greater way than the married, as the celibate St. Paul did for his spiritual children: “Though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the Gospel.”Of course that in my mind goes against the commandment to procreate
The blessings of the celibate life, freely received as a gift from God for the sake of God and neighbor, are even greater. Marriage is a great and holy thing, a sacrament signifying that divine union which holy celibacy, freely received, realizes even in this life. When we all attain the latter, marriage will pass away.I can’t see why God would not want his servants to enjoy the blessings of marriage.
