Well let’s see, where do we start.
How about Authority. WHere does that come from in either ?
Or History. …
Or Authenticity. …
Or … … …

Can we trace the sources and facts ???

Not just yet…but I will!

Bert Ghezzi is a parishioner at my church, and I have a few of his books that I’m working through first 🙂

Any answer you receive is obviously going to be tailored to the personal experience of the person answering, and the substance of their studies of Christianity.

Personally, I think Catholicism has the far stronger foundation of apostolic continuity than the LDS Church. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have left the LDS Church for the sake of conversion to Catholicism.

We can sit here all day arguing about whether the Book of Mormon is congruous with what we know scientifically and anthropologically about the ancient Americas, whether Joseph Smith was of solid character, and whether the Latter-day revelations contained in the Mormon movement are of any use (let alone any truth) until we’re blue in the face. I believe that doing so completely misses the most important point: The alleged apostasy.

I find it far more fruitful to go in search of this apostasy for doing so is the only way in which we can simultaneously deem one religion false and the other true. Attacking the specifics of Mormonism at best can only disprove Mormonism; it doesn’t offer an alternative.

I cannot see any evidence of an apostasy. Though doctrine certainly develops, what we know as the “Catholic Church” today can be organically deduced by what Christian communities were living, believing, and teaching in the first formidable centuries of Christianity. The contrary cannot be said about LDS theology. I cannot find any “Church of Jesus Christ of Former Day Saints”. I cannot find in the annals of history any group of Christians professing a belief in eternal marriage, temple sealings, endowments, a Heavenly Mother, a single prophet as the head of the Church, and baptism for the dead. These are all utterly lacking from the historical record.

To the contrary, I can see evidence of a Church that professed Marian devotion, believed in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, focused on the necessity of following one’s Bishop, venerated saints, and believed Jesus to be God incarnate.

apparently you cannot do anything but stir the contention pot. can you? how sad. i for one will not be posting in this thread excepty to say, id rather have a meal with 10 Godly minded Mormons, than with a mean spirited protestant like yourself. will pray for you. peace be with you. i say thru clenched teeth.😦

Interesting. I would have guessed that non-Catholic Christians would have said that they belong to Christ’s true Church as well 🤷

You learn something new everyday.

God bless

This isn’t going to be pretty. 😦
I agree.

All I’ll say is that I agree with xixxvmcm85, that it boils down to whether there was a Great Apostasy or not, and which one continues the original Christian doctrines.

BOTH claims are true!

One is the one true church of J. Smith, the other is the one true church of J. Christ.

Both can be traced to ‘their’ respective source and the evidence for either is conclusive.

The follower has no problem in deciding for the evidence is there so that there is no confusion…unless IGNORANCE is preferred!

The same can be said of ALL other claimants.

But that isn’t actually the claim that the Mormons make. The LDS Church claims to be Jesus’ Church, evident in the name itself.

The Book of Mormon is firmly seated upon the assumption that there was an apostasy. Once you remove the BoM from its chair, the chair will disappear, because its only purpose is to justify the BoM.

Hisalone,
I was avoiding this thread, but I suppose at least a short response will provide a possible insight.

The Jews claimed to have the One True Church, and for the most part they rejected Jesus. They had had various “apostasies” or in other words, had lost their bearings as prophesied by Moses and by several of the prophets of the Old Testament, and as confirmed by the Savior as He taught the descendants of some of those who had rejected earlier prophets.

It is significant to realize that those earlier people lost their bearings without prophets among them to keep providing the kind of direction and teachings that would keep them on a pure path. This had been prophesied. Another falling away had also been prophesied by the apostles in the New Testament. The Book of Revelation prophesies about it, and about the coming of an angel (Revelation 14:6) to give the everlasting gospel to the people on earth.

The LDS church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) bears the name of Jesus Christ because He inspired that it be called by His name. It is not a made-up thing, nor a shadow of reality.

But to answer your question, I would have to say that the Catholic church has the more “believable” claim and that will probably be so for years to come. “Believable” is based on one’s expectations of how God would deal with His children, and what one has been taught by other believable people.

But God may do things in unexpected ways and have a purpose in doing that. Believable people may have traditions that basically hamper the one-to-one communication offered by the Holy Spirit. But they will always be believable.

P.S. The idea that desire is the motivating factor that will help a person “become a saint” is a great thought! 👍

ParkerD,
A most charitable and open-minded answer. Thanks for posting.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could all discuss our differences so calmly and clearly, with no need to ‘win the argument’. You are a refreshing change of pace here on CAF !

Thanks for your most charitable, civil post Parker !
Nice to see some reasonable, open minds on this forum.
Keep an open mind, see where God leads you.
God bless you.

Our duty as Christians is to always seek the Truth, and when we find it, to live by it.
