LDS and the massacre

The former husband was actually the current husband. Pratt’s new plural wife had married Pratt even though she was still married to the man who shot Pratt. Mormons of that day believed “gentile” marriages were invalid so they didn’t worry about the legality of someone actually getting a divorce first.
No surprise there… Thanks for the info.

Thought that the LDS set up a small memorial for the victims. I think that what and how it happened is debated, but not that it did happen.
That small memorial was set up by Federal troops–I believe the ones who buried the bodies.

On that cairn was a sign that said "Vengence is mine saith the LORD"

A few weeks later, Brigham Young and a contigent of his personal guard visited the site of Mountain Meadow. BY saw the sign, fumed, then ordered the monument torn down.

IMHO, the signs of a man who was angry his “policy” was questioned.

Even Mormon historians admit little or nothing of consequence happened in “Deseret” without BY’s approval–even if tacit and understood.

There is already documented proof BY gave approval for Mormon militia to “raid” Gentile parties when and where they could get away with it. The MM Massacre also occured within the context of the “Mormon Reformation”, “Danites”–and the height of the “Blood Atonement” doctrine–all under the approval of their Prophet.

There are some accounts that the Fancher party making there way across Deseret, so disgusted by the bigotry shown by Mormons, started mouthing off–including some party member’s bragging “Yeah, I was in that crowd outside the Carthage jail the night we shot old Joe Smith”

To some Mormon’s of that time and placce, that was sufficient reason for killing someone.

But before the massacre BY sent a message saying they were not to sell them anything, not a grain of wheat, funny they got that one.
If they had email a lot of information would have gotten places a whole lot faster.

yes those things. federal troops were required because the LDS were blatantly defying federal law and making all kinds of threat with their bloody oaths of vengeance.

the “crimes” were often committed by the LDS and a lot of the “persecution” came from former LDS who were angered at being deceived, especially when they discovered “prophets” and “apostles” trying to sleep with their wives and daughters under the guise of “revelation”.
I still don’t get it why everyone who speaks badly about the church words are accorded credit on par with scripture and those who speak in favor of it are assumed to be ignorant or liars.

The saints where quite loyal to the government in spite of the abuses suffered.

Fact is teancum, the federal government assigned territorial governors, whose authority was not only denied by the LDS communities, but downright rebelled against. BY being the most outspoken against being ruled by “outsiders” and non-Mormons.

We have got a territorial government, and I am and will be the governor, and no power can hinder it until the Lord Almighty says, ‘Brigham, you need not be governor any longer,’ and then I am willing to yield to another.” Brigham Young
Many of the “rebellion” claims where made because the saints did not endorse the bad behavior of some people in power.

you are in serious denial. they were NOT loyal to the US nor obedient to it’s laws. this is easily verifiable.

so federal troops had to be sent in for a personal vendetta? please…the LDS church would be gone now if that were true.

What, the “bad behavior” of territorial governors who condemned and tried to end the practice of polygamy, right there, under ol’ Brigham’s nose? How shocking!

Well I was not there, but my family was. They where loyal to the US despite its failure to insure their rights. They had a beef with some states and their “militias”, but robbery and rape and murder tend to not leave a positive impression.

So only those who agree with the anti-Mormon view of history are not in denial.

You know I came to these forums hoping for some useful discussion sadly I find all to often that this is not a discussion forum but a digital bullying club. If the manors of the posters here are even remotely a representation of what a “Christian” behaves like it must make our Lord weep.

You won’t find much in the way of useful discussion here. I’ve found that there is a lot of anti-any other religion here. I’m sure our Lord is crying buckets. Don’t let it get to you. I’m sure there are a lot of understanding Catholics here; not everyone is so anti. Anyway, whatever happened is history and there is nothing anyone can do to change what happened in the past.

I’d like to point out that that movie was one of the most ridiculous and disgusting movies I’ve ever seen. It made me sick to my stomach that it could be so blatantly anti-religion.

And that’s what it was… anti-religion. Catholics have seen this kind of garbage on film for years and the only good thing I can say about the movie is that it was so horribly written, performed, and directed that no one could possibly take it seriously. The shear fact that is was such a poor film has lessened it’s anti-religious impact.

More damaging and much better produced movies have been made that attach religion (for example, the Da Vinci Code, which wasn’t a real gem either).

Since the Mountain Meadow Massacre is history, (unlike the da Vinci movie, it’s not fiction) I didn’t even think the movie was being addressed.

As far as the Mountain Meadow Massacre being disgusting, I’m sure those innocents who were betrayed and butchered while under “LDS protection” thought so too.
