No offense to the Non-Mormons here discussing the WoW.

But if it’s your aim to engage in thoughtful debate and discussion over the merits of Mormonism in general, I think looking to the WoW as a focus of such a goal is a poor choice.

There are some very meritorious aspects of Mormonism and the WoW is certainly among the top of them.

To try and find a “weakness” in the LDS Church by using the WoW as an example is fool-hardly at the very least.

That is not the objective of this thread. I started it to bring up a subject that would be less controversial in an environment of fierce and hostile debate.

If you object to a discussion of the similarities between Mormonism and Islam, perhaps it is because of bigotry against Islam.

Both do not believe in a separation of church and state.

Good Morning LongJourney! 🙂

You may be confusing me with someone else. My posts have nothing about Islam in them.
They have been strictly about the WoW. Period. 🙂

**dianaiad, **

what do you make of this:

“Nevertheless, contemporary records indicate that Joseph Smith, Jr. was not, himself, a strict observer. Smith is recorded at various times as drinking tea, beer, and wine. There is a report he also smoked tobacco: according to Amasa Lyman, a member of the First Presidency under Smith, Smith once finished preaching a sermon on the Word of Wisdom and immediately afterward rode through the streets smoking a cigar.”
Source.

He is no different than Muhammed who allowed polygamy of 4 wives yet he took for himself 13 wives…
Sam, when given, the Word of Wisdom was health advice, and the very text of it says that it was so, and 'not by commandment." If Joseph Smith did this, how is it different from a fat doctor telling his patients to lose weight? The advice is still good. 😉

We presently do not abstain from coffee, tea, alchohol and tobacco because the Word of Wisdom *commands *us not to. We abstain because at a certain point in our history (after JS’ death) we promised, as a people, not to use them. It became a covenant then.

By the way,
Joseph Smith never preached that one should restrict oneself to four wives.

Although there are many similarities between Mormonism and Islam, there is one chief difference: Islam is fiercely monotheistic, while Mormonism allows for many gods, and even the Trinity is polytheistic. Both believe that worthy men can practice polygamy in heaven. Christianity believes that there is no sexuality in heaven.

The WoW recommends restriction of meat intake, except in wintertime and times of famine. However, LDS choose to ignore this aspect of the WoW. Muslims, however, prohibit the eating of pork, and this is rigorously followed. LDS rigorously avoid the use of alcohol, but Muslims in Western society often see nothing wrong with having a drink now and then. Another major similarity is that use of violence to defend the faith is encouraged in certain circumstances, and these are core doctrines.

One might wonder if Smith & Co. copied their religion after what they knew of Islam, making one VERY serious error.

Sam, could you fact-check these observations for me?
Wow.

Just…wow.

LJ, are you one of those people who believe that Obama is not a natural born citizen of the USA and that he’s ‘really’ Muslim?

As a matter of fact, I firmly believe that Obama was born in Hawaii, and so long as he is a decent, open-minded person, it doesn’t matter what religion he is. I am 100% behind him, except for abortion.

I am also aware that LDS people tend to cozy up to Muslims, pointing out the similarities in the religions. I am also aware that Muslims reject Mormon teachings on the nature of God, the Mormon history of racism, and the attitude of “white privilege” which many LDS exhibit. One critical aspect of the radical Muslim movement is that many have spent some time in the USA. I wonder if there is a relationship?

And do you make those same false accusations of Obama? After all, you share the same religion as Glenn Beck. I can make generalizations, too. Unlike you, I ask gentle questions and/or make subtle innuendo.

Interesting, if irelevent…

We do? News to me.

My goodness. So many insults in so short a post…

That depends upon whether you put the horse in front of the cart or behind it, m’friend.
And do you make those same false accusations of Obama?
I made no accusations. I asked you a question. AMOF, it doesn’t matter where Obama was born; his mother was a citizen, and that makes Obama a 'natural born citizen." As to whether he is Muslim, he says he isn’t, therefore…he isn’t. There is enough about the man to criticise without making up stuff.
After all, you share the same religion as Glenn Beck.
You know, you are quite right about that…though I have a sneaking suspicion that the only way you would really go right is by making three left turns. 😉
I can make generalizations, too. Unlike you, I ask gentle questions and/or make subtle innuendo.
:ehh:

only you would ask a question then say the answer is irrelevant
I didn’t ask him if he supported Obama. Since I didn’t ask him that, his mention of support is irrelevant.

BTW, I happen to believe that Obama is very much in the running for 'worst president in US history," and that’s saying something, given my opinion of James Buchanan. 😉 (and yes, that, too, is completely irrelevant.)

My question was to point out the idiocy of the charges being made regarding the ‘similarities’ between Islam and Mormonism. You’ve heard of Godwin’s Law, right? Well, it is is becoming more and more popular to use Islam and Mohammad as the tar to brush with, rather than Germany and Hitler, it seems.

Perhaps someone should write a corollary to Godwin’s’ Law?

Perhaps one could call it “LJ’s corollary?”

Sorry. Were you responding to me? Can’t be. You promised you were ignoring me.

How about your use of Stalin’s corollary on Pres. Obama and those who support him???

Muslims in western society whom do not adhere to the teachings of Islam are sinning, those drinking alcohol or handling pork are sinning per authentic hadiths…

As for Joseph Smith, as I told dianaiad in my previous post that he is no different than Muhammed, putting the law then himself not following it, as Muhammed allowed polygamy of 4 wives but he took for himself 13 wives, then I will not consider him as a prophet from GOD, the true prophet should be a role model for many generations, so his smallest action is countable.

Perhaps anti-American sentiment among Muslims has a lot to do also with some of the sins in Western society-- alcohol and sex, primarily. I am going to ask that this thread be closed, before it goes south with anti-Muslim sentiment.
