Hello all;

My understanding is that there is LDS doctrine that God the Heavenly Father propagated each of us with a Heavenly Mother who is also a divine being, and that we all existed in a pre-mortal state, with these two divine beings as their literal offspring.

Assuming my general understanding is correct, why do LDS members not offer prayers to their divine Heavenly Mother as well as their divine Heavenly Father? If you do, then why do we not hear more about this? Do you believe she can intercede for you? Does she have a name? What do you know about her? A very interesting notion indeed. While I do not ascribe to it, I would certainly like to know more about what LDS members do believe about their Heavenly Mother.

Peace,
Robert

Good questions.

I find that the Mormons here on this board are so busy putting out fires, that there is little hope of any of them supplying us with a simple overview or creed of their unique beliefs.

Modern-day LDS deny any doctrines about “Heavenly Mother.” She was part of the early speculative theology of Mormonism, and has been officially forgotten. In fact, if I remember right, one feminist LDS author was excommunicated for trying to bring up the subject again. She is actually a borrowing from speculative Masonry.

I’d like to add a question to this. Did Jesus have two mothers; one heavenly and one earthly?

From what I have read in their "Proclamation of (or “on”, I can’t remember) the Family, the Mormon church today teaches that there were Heavenly Parents. As I review their data they do not say more than that. They say that this concept of a Heavenly Mother is true, but they do not know more about it. In questioning a Mormon she stated that no further revelation has been received leaving them without any other details than her existence.

When I questioned further about praying to her, she said that they only pray to God the Father as that was the form of prayer Jesus taught. It would be curious to find out if lay members think more about this doctrine or pray on their own to her.

Mormon hymn, “O My Father”…

Verse 3:

I had learned to call thee Father,
Thru thy Spirit from on high,
But, until the key of knowledge
Was restored, I knew not why.
In the heav’ns are parents single?
No, the thought makes reason stare!
Truth is reason; truth eternal
Tells me I’ve a mother there.

Verse 4:

When I leave this frail existence,
When I lay this mortal by,
Father, Mother, may I meet you
In your royal courts on high?
Then, at length, when I’ve completed
All you sent me forth to do,
With your mutual approbation
Let me come and dwell with you.

Just really curious as to why no Mormons have posted on this thread so far.

Didn’t a Mormon lady share here that she and others were not to look more into the life and devotion to the Blessed Mother by her church leader?

I haven’t seen that, but are you talking about Mary or their version of a Heavenly Mother who procreates with Heavenly Father? In my opinion, a heavenly mother who produces spirit children would be consitent with their view of creation and I wonder why they would no longer be allowed to believe this.

If I recall correctly, the lady was referring to the Mother of Christ.

It would be most interesting to see the response of Mormon women if they were given devotions to Mary.

We do believe in a Heavenly Mother, but we know nothing about Her, other than She exists.
We do not pray to her because we were directed to pray to the Father in the name of Jesus Christ.

Thanks, Flyonthewall…

Will get back later…going to work now.

God bless!

Something that comes to mind here. If God can create, why would He have to pro-create?
Just wondering.

While this is an admirable proclamation in support of marriage and family, I don’t see where it directs LDS members to pray only to the Father in the name of Jesus Christ. It does acknowledge heavenly parents, but it doesn’t seem to go any further than that, as far as I could tell.

Is there another LDS Church document that speaks more directly to the questions I raised in the OP? Any help would be appreciated.

My understanding is that there is LDS doctrine that God the Heavenly Father propagated each of us with a Heavenly Mother who is also a divine being, and that we all existed in a pre-mortal state, with these two divine beings as their literal offspring.
In Genesis 1:27 it states:

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

This suggests that God, or the “image” of God, is in some way or another both male and female. However, there are many other scriptures (too numerous to mention, in the OT as well as NT), which teach that God is in fact male. Jesus was male, and He commanded us to address God as Father, which is male; and He also addressed God as His Father. Therefore the only other way to interpret Genesis 1:27 is to conclude that God has a female counterpart, Who is equally divine like Himself. I don’t see how else one can logically interpret that scripture.
Assuming my general understanding is correct, . . .
Your understanding is not correct. Apart from asserting that God has a female counterpart, nothing further is stated in scripture about God “procreating” man with the help of His female counterpart.
. . . why do LDS members not offer prayers to their divine Heavenly Mother as well as their divine Heavenly Father?
For the same reason that they don’t (as a rule) address their prayers to Jesus, because He commsnded His disciples to address their prayers to the Father, and not to Himself or anyone else.
If you do, then why do we not hear more about this? Do you believe she can intercede for you? Does she have a name? What do you know about her? A very interesting notion indeed. Nothing further is known about her apart from what is stated above.

I agree with you that God, the Father, is male. So is the Holy Spirit. But to “logically conclude” that God had/has a female counterpart is really not only building strawmen, pushing the envelope, fantasy, wishful thinking, etc., but is utterly ridiculous.

First, there is NO indication or mention of any female counterpart or divinity in any of the Judaeo-Christian Scriptures. There is no mention of such in any Gnosis texts or spurious Gospels. And second, God, being Omniscient and Omnipotent, needs no female counterpart for ***absolutely nothing *** is impossible for Him.
Your understanding is not correct. Apart from asserting that God has a female counterpart, nothing further is stated in scripture about God “procreating” man with the help of His female counterpart.
I think you had better re-read the scriptures and try to understand what they say and mean. This time do it without any LDS spin.
For the same reason that they don’t (as a rule) address their prayers to Jesus, because He commsnded His disciples to address their prayers to the Father, and not to Himself or anyone else.
I know that Jesus said to direct our prayers to the Father, but where in the Bible does He say not to pray to Him? Jesus is God the same as the Father. He was worshipped by the people, disciples, and Apostles and yet did not admonish them for that. So why should we not pray to Him too?
Nothing further is known about her apart from what is stated above.
As a comment: I have been told by different Mormons that Heavenly Father had sexual intercourse with Mary to beget Jesus and that Mary occupies a place alongside Heavenly Father in His household.

I love the painting of the Prodigal Son by Rembrandt. He shows God as both male and female. But we know God as neither but rather Creator. God is Spirit and we are to worship Him in Spirit and in truth.

You can spot it in the hands

We know as Christians that these qualities, male and female do come from God but God is not one of His created creatures.

For me in the image of God means simply “Love”

Here is a good Article regarding this
http://www.saintpetercatholic.com/QA_image_of_God.htm

Again we have to remind ourselves as Christians that when we speak to the LDS we are not speaking about the same god. This makes it almost impossible to have a coherent conversation with them, or them with us. Especially when we start speaking together without this forefront in our minds.

Think about it when we speak about God or Jesus for that matter.
For them god is a physical being living with and among other numerous gods. That they to are spirit children of other gods. Did not the Romans believe the same?

Now us who are Christian place our faith and hope in One God who is not a solitude God but rather a God of love, a God of relationship, this love is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever.

Christians can never speak of many gods as our God is One God and undivided. I could not imagine God being like me physically in any way shape or form. He see’s everything that is all at once in all eternity . Now those are eyes unlike mine. He can hear every prayer ever said throughout all time, now those ears are unlike mine He embraces eternity and still knows me down to, well everything. Those are arms unlike mine. He is in all things including the tiny snow flake that just dropped in front of my window as he holds all things together.

Yes I can have Him all wrapped up in Jesus, recently into a tiny babe. I can see Him there, I can speak to Him there, I can be loved by Him everywhere. Yes in Jesus God does have a body, and we ourselves are each part of this body in a very special way. The eternal Son who took on the form of man in order to save mankind. This is how He chose to do it, to come and get us as one of us. We see this above our altars in all of our Churches across the world. Something to ponder deeply. What a God!
