In his address to the Catholic Church’s World Youth Day, during his visit in Australia, the Pope gave a message to the youth that I rather liked. Here is an extract:

“In so many of our societies, side by side with material prosperity, a spiritual desert is spreading - an interior emptiness, an unnamed fear, a quiet sense of despair,” he said in his homily.

He said God was asking young people to be “prophets for a new age” in which “hope liberates us from the shallowness, apathy and self-absorption which deadens our souls and poisons our relationships”.

At the close of his address, the Pope announced that the next World Youth Day, in 2011, would be held in Spain, and pledged to attend.

“Until then, let us continue to pray for one another and let us joyfully bear witness to Christ before the world,” he told pilgrims, many of whom had travelled from around the world to be there. Source

Trouble is, the LDS message of the Restoration is the best hope of actually fulfilling it. It cannot be done with the worn-out rhetoric of a bygone age. Only the LDS message of the Restoration has the spiritual potency to impart to the world that hope that the Pope encourages them to obtain:

D&C 19:

37 And speak freely to all; yea, preach, exhort, declare the truth, even with a loud voice, with a sound of rejoicing, crying—Hosanna, hosanna, blessed be the name of the Lord God

D&C 29:

4 Verily, I say unto you that ye are chosen out of the world to declare my gospel with the sound of rejoicing, as with the voice of a trump.

5 Lift up your hearts and be glad, for I am in your midst, and am your advocate with the Father; and it is his good will to give you the kingdom.

D&C 39:

19 Wherefore, go forth, crying with a loud voice, saying: The kingdom of heaven is at hand; crying: Hosanna! blessed be the name of the Most High God.

I disagree with your opinion on the matter and the Holy Father will certainly not encourage Catholics to leave Christianity and embrace the LDS. “Worn-out rhetoric of a bygone age” indeed.

Zeriunius:
I know more apostate Mormons and/or ex-mormons than practicing Mormons.

The LDS’s flaws include the same as Catholicism (Ritualistic, authoritarian, often poorly educated faithful), plus the issues of Revisionism and of the Book of Mormon. Plus, it lacks the historical connections to Jesus and the Apostles, the truest strength of both Catholic and Orthodox hierarchies.

(And while I’ve read the BoM, the effect was exactly the opposite of the intent of sending it; I immediately found it not credible, and while a fun read, it convinced me of the wrongness of Mormonism. Joseph Smith did write some good fantasy…)

And, given the similarities in praxis & liturgy, it would fare no better.

I think that Z is referring to soundbites without action. I also agree with the pope’s message but in order to fight materialism and popular culture and the desert which many of our youth are now experiencing, we need concrete action by not only the catholic membership but all christian denominations, including the mormons.

Pope Benedict XVI would not encourage anyone to leave the one true Church. He does encourage us to reach out to the separated brethren who believe in the divinity of Christ, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, ONE GOD, to unify the Church.

We are also to reach out to non-believers.

A restoration is not needed. It is a unification that the Pope calls for.

While it is wise to avoid churches started by false prophets, we still reach out to them and most certainly welcome them to the Church.

Our Lord gave His life asking the Father to forgive those who persecuted Him. Unlike some self appointed prophets who died with a curse upon their lips and a gun in their hand, like Joseph Smith.

Who would you follow?

You’ve selected quotes from the Doctrines and Covenants, please explain the quote from the DC 84:1-5 for everyone.

Zerinus,

I am glad to hear that the words of the Holy father spoke to you. You need to listen more to him and the words of Gods Holy Catholic Church. Put away the BoM and other writings of this false religion as to us your words they are the worn-out rhetoric of a bygone age. the false prophet Smith and his followers are gone and Time that they are forgotten.

Peace and love of Christ be with you.

C’mon zerinus, in how many threads do you want us to tell you how wrong you are? Are you a masochist or something? No… I forgot… just brainwashed.

Why don’t you, just once, try to rationally process the following:

CLAIM: Mormons have their own interpretation of Scripture.
FACT: The only legitimate authority of Scripture interpretation is the Catholic Church.
CONCLUSION: Mormons have no authority to interpret Scripture.

CLAIM: Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon religion, was a prophet.
FACT: Joseph Smith’s prophecies have failed to come true.
CONCLUSION: Joseph Smith was a false prophet who founded a false religion.

CLAIM: The Mormon religion was founded upon an angel appearing to 14 year old Joseph Smith.
FACT: An angel from God would never go against God’s word. (Matthew 16: 18-19 – 18And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.)
CONCLUSION: Joseph Smith was either hallucinating or was deluded by Satan.

CLAIM: Mormons claim there was a “great apostasy” in the one, true Church.
FACT: Mormons cannot identify when or where the supposed apostasy began, who started it, or who defended against it.
CONCLUSION: There was no “great apostasy.”

CLAIM: The Mormon religion was founded to restore the Church after “the great apostasy.”
FACT: There was no “great apostasy.”
CONCLUSION: The Mormon religion was founded upon a false premise.

CLAIM: Mormons boast their religion to be the true, restored Church.
FACT: The one, true Church needed no restoration (since there was no “great apostasy”).
CONCLUSION: The Mormon religion is itself an apostate religion.

CLAIM: The Mormon religion was founded by a delusional 14 year old in the 1800’s.
FACT: The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus the Christ circa 33 A.D.
CONCLUSION: The Catholic Church is the one, true Church, founded the Jesus, the Lord, Himself.

The Mormons will never be able to become holy witnesses without the grace which comes through the blood, body, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. They can be a moral people, but they can’t accomplish the work of God without Jesus being with them. That work is being accomplished more fruitfully by the Catholic Church than by any other organization in the world. Imagine what kind of world this would be without the Catholic Church’s witness to Christ. It would be complete confusion. Would anti-abortion laws or the fight against gay marriage be even possible without the work of the Catholic Church’s members? God set up his church and stayed with it. It is the Catholic Church’s joy to continue to witness to the divinity of Christ as it has done for 2,000 years.

Thank you Tietjen, why me, and others for your comments. What I was referring to was actually something more along the lines of what is suggested in these verses in LDS scripture:

D&C 20:

5 After it was truly manifested unto this first elder that he had received a remission of his sins, he was entangled again in the vanities of the world;

6 But after repenting, and humbling himself sincerely, through faith, God ministered unto him by an holy angel, whose countenance was as lightning, and whose garments were pure and white above all other whiteness;

7 And gave unto him commandments which inspired him;

8 And gave him power from on high, by the means which were before prepared, to translate the Book of Mormon;

9 Which contains a record of a fallen people, and the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles and to the Jews also;

10 Which was given by inspiration, and is confirmed to others by the ministering of angels, and is declared unto the world by them—

11 Proving to the world that the holy scriptures are true, and that God does inspire men and call them to his holy work in this age and generation, as well as in generations of old;

12 Thereby showing that he is the same God yesterday, today, and forever. Amen.

What greater message of hope can the world receive than that God is not dead, that He hasn’t forgotten about us, that He is not “in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked” (1 Kings 18:27); but that He is an unchangeable God, “the same yesterday, today and forever” (Heb. 13:8); and that He still communicates with man through prophets and Apostles, by revelations, visions, and ministration of angels as He did in ancient times? This is the message of hope that the LDS Church offers to the worked; and there is nothing that compares to it. You can harp on about the JWs, or the Moonies, or the Muslims etc. all you want; but they don’t have anything remotely like what we have to offer. They don’t even come close. That is the message of the Restored gospel of Jesus Christ, with the “angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come” (Rev. 14:6–7). I wouldn’t like to be on the wrong side of that message for sure.

The Catholic Church is indeed a great and respected institution; no doubts about it. She has maintained and preserved the gospel message in the world for all those many centuries. But all dispensations must eventually come to an end, and God starts a new. Of the Jews who still lived in the Jewish dispensation Jesus said: “No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better” (Luke 5:39). He was contrasting His own unfamiliar message with the old one that the Jews were accustomed to. His message was like “new wine,” and the old Jewish message was like “old wine”. He was acknowledging a truth that somebody who was accustomed to the old ways of doing things is not immediately going to like the new way; because he has the taste of the old familiar “wine” in his mouth, and thinks that the old one is better! But that is a mistaken approach. We shouldn’t reject something new just because it is new. We should examine it and test it, and be prepared to accept it if the Spirit of the Lord witness to us that it is true. What we offer to the world is like the new wine. The Catholic Church has the old wine. I agree that that is great stuff in its own right. But that does not mean that we should reject the new stuff just because it is new.

Are you proselytizing Catholics or encouraging them to leave the Church? It sure sounds like it to me. I’ll let the moderators decide that. In the meantime, explain these questions and REAL scriptures below:

Are you calling Jesus a failure when it comes to Him establishing His Church? Are you saying Jesus was like the wise man who built His Church on rock or like the foolish man who built his house on sand?

Mat 16:18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it.
Mat 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

What about Jesus’ promise He would be with His Church until the end of time?

Mat 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."

What about his promise to send the Holy Spirit as a guide who would abide with the Church?

Joh 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you for ever,

Joh 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

What about the Holy Spirit guiding the Church into all truth?

Joh 16:13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

May the peace of the Lord be with you,

Zerinus, you’re a walking contradiction. You say you liked the pope’s message, and in the next breath called it “worn-out rhetoric.” Well, at least you’re listening to the pope. I’ll give you credit for that. Gotta love that spritually impotent Catholic Church though, right? So impotent it’s only outlasted every organization on earth, spread to every corner of the globe, and now one of every six human beings on earth is Catholic, and we’re just starting the Springtime of the Church.

No, I think Pope Benedict knows exactly what he’s talking about. Keep listening to him, Zerinus. There is hope for you as well.

I think zerinus is right - a new message really is better than an old message. No more “worn-out rhetoric of a by-gone age” for me! I found a brand new cult that just started yesterday. That’s even more recent than the Mormons! Its message is soooooo new that it must be the best! I’m signing up right away!

Whoohoo!

no Joseph Smith made up his own theology based on the philosophies of men mingled with scripture…and then changed it as required to justify his despicable acts. you can read the mormon church spin on it at that link though.

In your Mormon FAQ you conveniently omitted the passage from 3 Nephi 18: 28-30:
[28]And now behold, this is the commandment which I give unto you, that ye shall not suffer any one knowingly to partake of my flesh and blood unworthily, when ye shall minister it;
[29] For whoso eateth and drinketh my flesh and blood unworthily eateth and drinketh damnation to his soul; therefore if ye know that a man is unworthy to eat and drink of my flesh and blood ye shall forbid him.
[30] Nevertheless, ye shall not cast him out from among you, but ye shall minister unto him and shall pray for him unto the Father, in my name; and if it so be that he repenteth and is baptized in my name, then shall ye receive him, and shall minister unto him of my flesh and blood.
Catholics also believe that we are receiving the Eucharist in memory of Christ. But we actually believe what your Book of Mormon teaches – that it is the flesh and blood of Christ. In making the LDS sacraments only a symbol you have denied the clear teaching of the Book of Mormon. This is not surprising because I don’t think Joseph Smith hardly even knew what was in the Book of Mormon. He simply copied Baptist theology of the day which was to call the Lord’s Supper only a symbol.

So, basically, you’re saying that people should take Joseph Smith’s words as holding more truth than Sacred Scripture? If *that’s * not apostasy, I don’t know what is.

In addition, that Joseph Smith set himself up as being more knowledgeable than God (which he did by re-writing Scripture), is blasphemous.

Soooo. . . you have freely chosen to be a member of a religion founded in the 1800’s by an apostate blasphemer, rather than to be a member of the One True Holy Catholic Church founded @ 33 A.D. by Jesus the Christ, Son of God and True God Himself, Redeemer and Lord – yep, that *realllly * makes a whole lot of sense. . .

Pish posh. You obviously have a very tenuous grasp of the difference between “private” “revelation” and “Revelation” in the RCC. The LDS concept is entirely alien to the RCC.
…while the Church recognizes that God has spoken to His servants in every age, and still continues thus to favour chosen souls, she is careful to distinguish these revelations from the Revelation which has been committed to her charge, and which she proposes to all her members for their acceptance. That Revelation was given in its entirety to Our Lord and His Apostles. After the death of the last of the twelve it could receive no increment. It was, as the Church calls it, a deposit – “the faith once delivered to the saints” (Jude, 2) – for which the Church was to “contend” but to which she could add nothing.
