I have a question for you LDS people (Mormons), or Catholics who might know the answer to this question. As far as I know, and I may be wrong, so please correct me if I am, the “prophet” of your (LDS) church talks directly to God (at least this is the LDS belief). I also understand one “prophet” can overturn what another “prophet” teaches. So if God reveals something to you, how can that be changed? does God lie? I also wanted to know if any Catholics know of any instances where one “prophet” contradicted another.

Here is my understanding
  • Any person who has the Holy Ghost with them will receive guidance an revelation from God.
  • We can receive this guidance in accordance to our stewardship: a teenager for themself; a parent for their family; a bishop for his ward; etc. The President (Prophet) has the whole LDS church as his stewardship.
true revelation will not contradict Scripture so no President can change the ten commandments or contradict the teaching of Jesus.

If a Prophet shares revelation that members should all get out of debt, that guidance is true and appropriate for the time. Future guidance for a specific generation and circumstance may appear to contradict guidance for a different time and people.
