LDS Eternal Marriage - Where does Jesus Fit In?

Something said by a Mormon on another thread got me thinking about LDS theology with regards to eternal marriage and Jesus. To achieve godhood in LDS theology, one must be married in the Mormon temple. My understanding is that Mormons believe God the Father went through this process Himself when he was a man on some other world before He became God. So if that’s the case then where does Jesus fit into this idea of eternal marriage given that He is not married?

In the first place in answer to your question here, the statement of Joseph Smith in the King Follett Discourse compares God the Father with Jesus Christ, not with us. Jesus did what He had seen His Father do “before this world came rolling into existence.”

Mormons believe all humankind are children of heavenly parents, and that would mean there is a Heavenly Mother whom we knew in the pre-mortal life with Heavenly Father, and she had a role of nurturing and loving and preparing spirits to come to this earth and actually assume the role of earthly parents.

There is no scriptural basis “yea” or “nay” as to whether Jesus will be married in heaven, since He has a completely unique role forever all through eternity as the Firstborn and the Redeemer. He is already a Creator and already a “Father” in a spiritual sense–the Father of the spiritual life and re-birth of each person who becomes sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

The Father and the Son were united in a plan to provide every means possible (in righteousness and in allowing freedom of choice) to allow the progress of spirits in mortality, and temple covenants are a part of that allowance for the opportunity to progress. Being earthly parents is also an important part of that opportunity to progress. The idea of becoming “heavenly parents” is really an extension of being earthly parents, always working hand in hand with God through love, faith, and inspiration to guide children toward their own progress. Jesus has a different role now, as He did on earth. His role is unlike any other.
