I would be interested in learning about the experience of anyone else having their LDS children attend Catholic Schools.

My niece (my LDS sister’s youngest daughter) attends Juan Diego Catholic High School in Draper, UT. She absolutely loves it and all of her best friends are Catholic. She loves the priests and nuns, attends weekly mass at the school and has a deep respect for Catholicism. However, she still considers herself LDS (at least for now 😉 ).

Yes, there is one LDS family attending our parish school, too. According to our principal, their eighth-grader is diligent in the daily religion class, knows all the prayers, attends Mass, and participates in all devotions not just satisfactorily, but downright enthusiastically. Presumably, she is also attending LDS religion classes every morning before going to school.

I wonder, why would a Mormon family deliberately choose to send their children to a Catholic school? Perhaps, in the hope that their children will have a more moral environment than in a public school? But, why would they want to introduce their children so intimately to a religious culture they believe to be corrupt and apostate?

I once heard Karl Keating speak in my local parish church when I lived in Virginia. I think he was asked about homeschooling–Catholic homeschooling is quite strong in Northern Virginia, due mainly to the extremely high tuition rates of the Catholic schools there–but he replied that if there were no Catholic schools near his home, then he would send his kids to another Christian school (e.g., Baptist), and just do appropriate “damage-control” at home later, when necessary. I gathered he believed there would be less to worry about at the Baptist school than at a public school.

Maybe that’s what the occasional LDS family is thinking when they enroll their kids in Catholic schools. Now, I wonder if other LDS families enroll their children in non-Catholic Christian schools for the same reasons?

Perhaps for the same reason some kids from the local anti-Catholic Evangelical church send their kids to Catholic high school. Their kids “evangelize” the Catholic kids from the inside and invite them to teen prayer meetings and bible studies at their Evnagelical church where they are lured away from the Catholic Church. Apologetics is not taught at this particular school, but I understand that some parents are trying to get apologetics courses started there.

My oldest is almost 10 and I’ve felt the need to get her started early on understanding the many misconceptions out there about Catholicism so that she’ll recognize them as false when she hears them.

Nancy 🙂

I will risk some personal details here for the purpose of sharing experience.

I was raised LDS but left as a teen. I had attended many churches but for many years quit going to any church. There came a time in my life when I felt the need to “grow up” and thus came an intense study of religion. After quite some time I felt that I needed to first proceed from the fact that I was a Christian. (defined in this case as a believer in Jesus Christ as God) with this focus on my research I came to a strong desire to look at the Catholic Church. I was in the fortunate position of being able to view numerous historic cathedrals as well as visit the vatican during this time period. I went to RCIA, received the sacraments and was happy.

I moved right after that, ended up overseas for a while and got a little bit out of the system with church. I married a wonderful lady who had been baptised Catholic as a baby but her family had converted to LDS. I was somewhat ignorant of proper marriage protocol and got confused about my Catholic status. Sooo with heavy pressure from wife and parents I got back into LDS…with a vengeance. Tried everything to be a true believer. spent years serving in callings, studying LDS apologetics, was a priesthood leader. gospel doctrine teacher, temple worker, etc. just could not find that this was God’s true plan of salvation. (LDS) Finally settled into a “denial” mode that it was okay to be LDS even though I didn’t believe in it as long as I worshipped Jesus.

Well, I believe the Lord got involved and an opportunity arose for us to place our children in a very nice catholic school. (friends told us about it, very inexpensive tuition and a new higher paying job all at the same time) My children have been welcomed here and are learning so much academically (our initial reason for signing up) I also enjoyed the christian environment as opposed to what was happening in public schools. I have gotten very involved with the school and have found great joy in returning to the holy catholic church. My wife even took a job there. (initially as a convenience for transportation and availability) She has always had doubts about LDS doctrine but now has openly questioned the doctrine and we are able to discuss religion openly and honestly with a new degree of intimacy in our marriage. She is able to see the glory of God now on a daily basis as she works with this school that is associated with a close, loving parish. She hasn’t signed up for RCIA yet and still attends LDS sevices (mostly) But I am hopeful that our experience with Catholic School will bring our whole family into communion wiht Gods church.

God bless Catholic schools for teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

That’s awesome.

I think a lot of folks today have become disenchated with public education and the proven efficiency and academic success of Catholic Schools have made them a “good bang to buck ratio” option.

My experience is that Catholic Schools can easily benefit non-Catholic students without compromising their catholic identity.

As far as proselytizing goes…Catholics don’t seem very agressive in this area and most Catholic Schools seem to be able to easily able handle fundamentalist attempts to “convert from within”.

I am still curious about others experience in this area. Both Catholics who knew Mormon kids in their Catholic School and LDS folks who attended (or their kids attended) Catholic Schools.

How do they handle it? It’s my understanding that when this goes on it’s in private. Thanks!

well in my experience there is little opportunity for fundamentalist to discuss anything at school. Religion classes are mandatory for all grades every day and are well guided to present a strong catholic identity.

Numerous school activities provide a thriving social life within the shelter of the school.

Sure, Catholic kids could be invited to “conversion traps” by fundamentalist kids but inour school that would be a tough sell and word would get around pretty quick. (resulting in some direct conversations about propriety)

Juan Diego Catholic High School in Utah (one of the biggest Catholic schools in the U.S. is (if I remeber correctly) only 70% Catholic. Most other students are LDS.

I would love to hear from any of the students and/or parents from that school. (both LDS and Catholic) I am interested in what they have learned after being exposed to the doctrines/practices of both churches as well as how they view the academic experience.
