Aren’t indigenous middle eastern people darker skinned? The Israelites would have been dark skinned, dark hair & eyes. Really - Jesus wasn’t fair skinned with blond hair & blue eyes. I would imagine at first glance they would not have looked much different than the native population in America.
Yes, Sephardic Jews typically have a darker complexion than Ashkenazi (European) Jews.

They would have a more olive brown complexion than Native Americans.

Thanks for this. It helps parse it out a bit.

I thought there were thousands upon thousands of Nephites in battle with the Lammanites?
They all came over on a few boats?**

Why are Israelites referred to as Native Americans? What is the connection there?
(My husband is Jewish and we recently had our DNA done - not Native American)
You’re trying to logically rationalize something for which there is absolutely no empirical evidence .

I agree at a closer look the differences between Native Americans and those from the Middle East would be apparent. But none would have been white as typically defined at the time the BoM was written.

(hence Mormons had no non-white members until the 70’s).
There have been non-white members of the LDS church before the 70’s, in fact there was at least one ordained while Joseph Smith was still around.

Apologies, I should have specified, African Americans couldn’t be full members until 1978. I suggest reading here as well as Mormon in America. African Americans were denied the full priesthood in the LDS church from 1852 to 1978 even if there were smaller numbers of African American members.

Yes, I was agreeing with your earlier statement that they would not have looked white, but would have had an olive brown complexion.

I am aware that there is no empirical evidence for the battle in the BoM.

I was allowing my mind to wander. Just how many boats would have been needed to bring over all of these men? Perhaps there were women and children as well?

To be fair they do say it was Lehi’s family and a few others that came over in the boats… so it wouldn’t have been a huge multitude initially.

I see. Lehi’s family and descendants made up the Nephite army?

Maybe they found and repurposed Noah’s ark? 🤷

I read the book of Mormon years ago, all I remember is that there was one war after another , it never occurred to me at time that there should be bones everywhere.

Or you know… DNA of middle eastern origin in the Native American populations.

The Vatican really hasn’t known what Mormons believe until recently.

John Paul II instructed we do not recognize any angels except those provided us by Sacred Scripture.

’s post that listed 600 AD as the date for the Nephite voyage is a typo. I believe he meant BC. This may help explain how a single boat of people (well two independent boats of people) eventually gave rise to the numbers required for the great wars of the Book of Mormon.

Mormons seal women to themselves as servants?
No. High ranking LDS used to seal Black people to themselves as servants ala Brigham Young’s teaching that Blacks could only receive a degree of celestial glory as servants (since their men are/were barred from the priesthood). Jane Elizabeth Manning James was the force who got the proverbial ball rolling.
