I am currently filling out a RYLA application to go to a leadership camp. It asks for leadership positions. I can’t think of any but one, altar serving. Is altar serving considered a leadership position? I need help fast, I received the application today and it is due Wednesday!

That really depends on if you were a lead altar server or acted as a sacristan. Personally I would not consider simply serving as a leadership position. Leadership generally involves making decisions, setting direction, or providing guidance toward a goal. It is possible to serve as an informal leader through leading group discussions or heading up a service project.

Not sure how involved you are with Rotary International (assuming RYLA is “Rotary Youth Leadership Award”), but keep in mind that Rotary International supports positions in opposition to Catholic teaching. In particular they support providing contraceptives as a form of women’s healthcare to limit or delay child bearing. Just mentioning that since most people think of Polio eradication when thinking of Rotarians and you might be suprised if you were unaware of positions they support.

I suppose you’re answer helps out. At my church there is only one altar server, since I live in a small town. Is that still leadership, since there is only one?

I’d be inclined to say no. If you’re alone, there’s no one for you to lead.
