Would my understanding of the OT improve if I learned how to read the penatuch and the other books in the OT in Hebrew? I have read some of Genisis and Exodus in an Jewish orthodox (but some how English) Bible and the phrasing seems completely different than any of my completely English Bibles. Is this significant or will either reading bring me to God all the same?

Learning the languages of Scripture (Greek and Hebrew) can only help you understand !🙂

However, it will involve a great deal of effort. Remember too, Biblical and modern Israeli Hebrew are quite different.

Still, if you have the discretionary time and money, it can’t hurt!

i briefly studied hebrew while taking a discovering judaism course at two local synagogues.
as someone said, modern herbrew will be different than hebrew in the torah.

it would be really good to take classes in hebrew and greek also. i wouldn’t mind learning latin either. the year i started high school - 1966, was the first year that latin was not a requirement in high school. i was happy at the time, but now i wish i would have even had one year of latin.

Your understanding would improve in one sense, yet knowing Hebrew doesn’t necessarily make someone better at understanding Scripture. St Thomas Aquinas didn’t know Hebrew yet its hard to imagine anyone being a better Bible scholar. I have noticed that translators are often lousy Bible interpreters. Knowing the original languages is a wonderful blessing but not the key to understanding the word of God.

Definitely. Some things just are better not being translated. Not so much to stifle understanding but avoidance of decadence of the powers and meanings behind the words. Sabaoth or Amen or Hosanna, for example.
