Learning Latin—need some help

Hello,

For learning the cases, I am just memorizing the endings relative to NGDAA. However, how do I know when I need to use a declension to modify the already modified case?

Please specify a system for this and the broad relational framework that exists between the cases and declensions.

The endings are what you use to decline, and the cases tell you which ending to use.

The following are very approximate:
nominative is subject
genitive is possessive and object of preposition of
dative is indirect object
accusative is direct object
and ablative is the object of other prepositions

Take a sentence:

Robin (non) of Sherwood (gen) gave John (dative) a nickname (acc) in jest (abl).

(I am no Latin scholar but hope any inaccuracy will be corrected by someone who is! In the meantime, I hope this will help get you started. What book are you using?)

Perhaps I am thick*, but question and request are meaningless to me. Can you give a concrete example of what you mean?

(* Not a Latin teacher, but I’ve studied it plenty)
