Learning NFP on your own?

I am celibate, unmarried, and may never get married, but I am very interested in NFP. Is it possible to learn on my own, without the aid of a proper course? Or would that be foolish to attempt?

If it is, what books or other resources would you recommend? I have heard Taking Charge of Your Fertility is good, so I am checking that out of the library soon.

I suggest starting with TCOYF from the library as you already have planned:thumbsup:. It’s a great introduction book and it’s what I started with… once you have the basics you can decide if you’d like to do more home study or take an actual course. NFP isn’t just for avoiding or attempting to conceive children…it is a powerful tool to help us women with reproductive issues and problems that may remain undiagnosed without this “insider info” into what our bodies are doing. I personally feel it (in a basic form) should be taught to all girls at the age of puberty and then expounded upon as needed.

It is possible to learn the Sympto-Thermal method without an instructor. I don’t recommend it though. You learn A LOT from the instruction. The Creighton Model doesn’t have a learn-on-your-own option, although they do have a distance learning option.

If you want to learn Sympto Thermal (STM) TCOYF is one option. The Couple To Couple League also offers their own home-study kit for their version of STM. www.ccli.org

If you want to learn Creighton, you need to contact a Creighton instructor. I believe Billings and Marquette also require an instructor.
