I work at Sonic, and last year they played this non-stop it seemed like! I don’t think I’ll survive if they do it again this year!

I’ve got that one beat. A few years back we decided to replace the local all-Christmas music station with Christmas CD’s brought in by the employees. This led to some good-natured ribbing (“Get back to work, Chris, or else I’ll bring in ‘A Very William Shatner Christmas’ for you to listen to!”). It also, unfortunately led to the following:

One of our more melancholy employees really liked the song “Blue Christmas”. The CD he brought in had “Blue Christmas” by at least 6 different singers, all on consecutive tracks. So we would have to listen to “Blue Christmas” for about 30 minutes straight! :crying: :banghead: :bigyikes:

Ew, there are so many yucky ones on that list, I couldn’t decide. How about the 12 dogs for Christmas, the parody of 12 days of Christmas? Another nasty one in my books…or"Rudolph, the rednosed reindeer", sung by Dean martin (as he contiuously gets more and more drunk during the song…shudder)

I like the Twelve Redneck Days of Christmas. I voted for So This Is Christmas(War is Over) as the worst Christmas song.

That utterly banal, monotonous, mind numbing “carol” about this kid who bangs a drum, demonstrating no talent, so that baby Jesus can smile, demonsttating no taste for music.

Hey - when Bing Crosby and David Bowie covered this song on a live TV bit - it was an immediate classic. Plus, the message in this song is that we can all approach Jesus with our humble offerings and expect his love.

My vote for all time worst - the Band Aid song… uuuuhhhgg! Kill me now!!!

One song that I absolutely detest is the Barbara Streisand’s version of Jingle Bells. If that was on the list I would have picked that instead of Madonna whom I have never heard sing and never will. But to get back to Barbara Streisand, the reason why I hate it so much is that she sings soooooo fast

I don’t recognize half of those songs. That means I’m either getting old or I’m succeeding at “being in the world, but not of the world” better than I thought.

I voted for the John Lennon song… that thing sets me teeth on edge. His “Imagine” song also seems to be a favorite at Christmas time on the secular radio stations because it is so anti-religion.

I agree about the Chipmunks though, they were wonderful and fun when I was a child so, sentimentalism wins out on theirs.

I would like to add to the “list” Celine Dion singing “Feliz Navidad”, the woman has a great range but with her French-Canadian accent trying to sing a Spanish song just doesn’t cut it. Or any Christmas song sung by the Beach Boys (I like the Beach Boys and got one or two of their albums on CD when CD’s first came out through BMG really cheap and got their Christmas Album too — aaaaa, what a waste of money!)

and it was obvious that Madonna’s version of Santa Baby would get the most votes …not because of the song…but who sings it.

“The Little Drummer Boy” has my vote. Was working in a large department store when tapes were used to send music throughout the store. After hearing that song 50 times a day, you came away with a “drumming” headache.

“Away in the Manger” would have been nice.

I rather like this song.

I consider the song’s questions to be rhetorical, much the same way people used come up and ask me, “Did you know you have a beautiful baby/brilliant child?” Of COURSE I knew that!

And in all fairness, Mary was not a prognosicator. She she DIDN’T know many of the scenarios mentioned in the song lyrics. (e.g., “Did you know that your baby boy would some day calm the waters?”)

And besides, I really Like Kathy Mattea’s voice. (I’ve never heard the song sung by anyone else, except KM and myself.)

Decisions, decisions. It was so hard to choose. I do not think there is a one on this list that I would willingly listen too. In fact, I think playing any of these to a prisoner, for example, would constitute cruel and unusual punishment, or, if it was a POW, would violate the Geneva Convention rules on torture.

It is not that they are irreverant, some are, some just try to be cute, it is that theyare so badly done. They represent the low-point for many “artists”, with the possible exception of Jeff Foxworthy.

The John Lennon song got my vote.

Is that really a Christmas song? I myself like that song as it speaks to me very clearly about who Mary is and the Divinity of Jesus. But then, I have kind of wierd tastes in music (opera, the Moody Blues and Donna Cori Gibson) and am not very poetic or musical.

My two favorite song tend to bracket the Catholic celebration of Advent and Christmas, one is only played during Advent, the other only during Liturgical Christmas time.

“Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel” is my favorite advent song.

For Christmas time, it is “What Child Is This” which are words to the ancient Celtic melody “Greensleeves”, a haunting piece that always is stuck in my head. Sad and sweet at the same time, the words of this hymm remind me of the words Zechariah spoke to the Blessed Virgin Mary when Jesus was presented at the Temple.

The version that Eartha Kitt sang, in her day, was a bit riske, but it wasn’t blatant then the Mad-Donna version. Eartha’s version seems a bit nostalgia today. Mad-Donna’s is just trash.

I don’t really find it depressing - it’s more of a challenge to me and all of us to examine our fruits of the year and resolve to make the next year better
