I’ve been struggling greatly with this passage from the Gospels about the leaven of the Pharisees. If I recall correctly, all 4 Gospels have this account in some manner. The early church fathers wrote about it but not to great satisfaction. I’m looking for specifics about what exactly Christ was talking about. I wonder, too, if the Church has mechanism for guarding against such a thing. The reason I ask is, after reading the account of Paul baptizing Apollo, Paul’s sense of urgency regarding the matter convinced me that it was time to baptize my children. After emailing my local parish, I was emailed back an information packet to fill out. At the knowledge that children within his own flock were lacking sufficiently in the Grace of Baptism, my local priest’s response was to get more information? I immediately was brought to the crossing of the sea after the second multiplication of loaves and fishes and I believed I was seeing the leaven of the Pharisees in real time. I’ve since tried to understand this topic but not to much satisfaction.
Christ does mention specifically the numbers of left over baskets of bread, specifically the numbers 12 & 7, which clearly have significance in the Church. Today, while meditating on this topic, I was comforted by the thought that, after feeding his flock, what was left? 12 & 7. The priesthood and the Sacraments? I don’t know, but it was a nice thought. In any event, if someone can shed some light on this, I’d sure appreciate it. Thanks and God bless.
