Leavers at Mass

I think those who leave during mass are not only disrespecful, but are also denigrating themselves. Whatever the reason why they leave, I think the priest should say something against it over the pulpit so that such a thing is known to be both deplorable and irreverent to the other Parishiners and above all to God.
 
I almost left Mass last week. I thought to myself, I can’t receive the Eucharist, why should I even be here, blah, blah, blah… but really what was going on…

I saw numerous people never praying before the Mass. The back row had about four old ladies, gabbing away. People were staring at me for some reason. No one around me gave an offering. A lot of people were talking throughout the Mass. Most people just squatted, rather than kneeling (I know some could have problems) oh, and this is the one that just made my skin crawl…there were two ladies, one on one side of me, one on another…they were trying their best to blech out responding prayers before everyone else could :mad: ! Then I was on a small pew with just a couple, I didn’t have a kneeler in front of me, but once I scooted over, I would (make sense), then a man came in and sat in between me and this couple…no kneeler for me!

(I know that I can not judge people hearts)

But I really feel like I get more out of Adoration right now…
 
Or you could just say a prayer for them, that if they are leaving early for no reason they can see and understand how it is disrespectful to God or that if there truly is something going on in their lives to make them leave early, that they find a solution soon.

Yes, the best thing you said is we should pray for them! I know I pray that I can become a better Christian and follow Catholic teachings more sincerely. My parish has Perpetual Adoration and I find myself wanting to go there more often than I do. Many of our Catholic brothers and sisters miss so much of their own faith! God Bless.
 
It seems like no matter how gently or cautiously someone may post a question or comment regarding something witnessed at Mass, it’s only a matter of time before they are more or less accused of being judgmental and told to focus on the Mass a little harder. Reading through some of the responses here, I literally had to go back to the OP to see what I missed. Ends up I didn’t miss anything. This person didn’t make any judgmental or uncharitable statements.

With a name like Catechumen08, just a guess here… this is probably someone new to the Church who could use a little more leeway and a little less admonishment.

I hear you and I have felt like that many times, but if I were to let the irreverence of others drive me out of Mass, I would be guilty of placing their actions in greater importance than the action of Christ in the Mass–idolatry. and I would be guilty of giving the victory to satan, who just loves it when I let other people determine my actions, and give me an excuse to avoid my duty to God. No, I would not “get more out of adoration”. Without the Eucharist confected in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, there can be no adoration (besides, I would be in a state of mortal sin for deliberatly missing Mass, and so would derive no benefit until I remedied my situation in confession).
 
Every Holy Thursday, our old Pastor (God Rest Him!) always gave the same homily, about the one Apostle who left the first Mass early. Not the sort of person we all want to aspire to be!

Some have good reasons to leave early, some don’t. Just be grateful they helped free up the parking lot for you.

Sometimes people just don’t know better because they are new to the church. Praise the Lord that they are there! The formation will come, let’s not alienate them out with judgemental comments, but simply celebrate the fact that they are there. Trust that the Holy spirit will work in them. We do not all arrive on this earth fully formed Catholics, some bumble their way along, little by little.

Leaving Mass early at my parish wouldn’t do anyone any good, the parking lot is literally a GRID, you are parked in until others around you leave.

Of course, some of those that leave early, also arrived late, and got spots in the back row, but…
 
My parish put pamphlets near the exits that indicated that leaving before mass is over is like leaving from a dinner party that you were invited to as soon as the food has been eaten. Rude! 🙂
