I’ve always heard you should never leave Jesus alone during Eucharistic Adoration (I would never do so) I was just wondering why? We have it once a month I usually go later at night for one hour and I’m always afraid when my hour is up what happens if no one shows up for the next hour, I’m assuming I’d need to stay.

Dearest dave

You have raised a good point, but do not worry, fetch the Priest. You are right Jesus should never be left alone when the Eucharist is exposed in the Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, this is not only because it is irreverent to do so, but because of protecting the Eucharist from desecration, who knows who will wander into the church.

Please don’t spend your last minutes with your Jesus worrying, tell Him you are about to leave and do not want to leave Him alone, then spend your time loving and adoring Him.

If there are no lay people about, go and get your Priest and let him know no-one is in the church and you are about to leave, if you do not have to leave stay and love your Jesus and protect Him also.

God Bless you Dave and much love and peace to you

Many adoration chapels, anticipating this kind of problem, will provide access to a telephone and keep a list of phone numbers somewhere nearby. That way, if you can’t stay until the next adorer arrives, the scheduling coordinator can make sure our Lord is never abandoned.

Hope that helps.

We have 24 hr Eucharistic adoration in our chapel. It is locked at night, so the one leaving has to let the one arriving into the chapel. If no one comes at the end of the hour, we stay until somone does come. There is a phone so we could call the priest or the adoration coordinator, but generally no one wants to disturb them, and this doesn’t happen often. If it does, we just stay an extra hour.

The Eucharist is reposed so there is no opportunity for someone to take it and commit a sacriledge.

When we come up short because someone misses their assigned hour, we have the option of staying, or reposing it. Adoration is conducted in the chapel, and there is a code operated lockbox for the tabernacle key.
