Leaving Mass before the last song has finished?

So if I understand correctly, if I HAVE to leave early, I shouldn’t even go to Mass because it would be rude? I take the bus (have no car), and I work on Sundays and Saturday nights. It is a huge effort to get to Mass. If I have time, I stay the whole time, but sometimes those few minutes mean the difference between making my bus (there have been times I’ve had to sprint to the bus) and not getting disciplined, and waiting a half hour, being late, and risk losing the job (strict lateness policy). Believe me, the job isn’t something I look forward to, but it pays the bills.
You could find a different Mass? I think you would be the exception, but I highly, highly doubt that half of the congregation has work straight after Mass. If they did, they would ask for the Mass times to be changed.

I said it is rude. You automatically assume that it is then a sin and demand to see a document from the Vatican. Do you know how illogical you are sounding? It is rude according to the social norm, and is there seriously something more important that you need to run out of Mass during the recessional hymn? They aren’t playing it for 10 minutes after the priest has left. I don’t know about you, but If I was in such a rush I wouldn’t receive Holy Communion simply because I wasn’t spiritually prepared for it.
What social norm? The normative practices of the mass are established in the GIRM, which states that the mass ends with the dismissal (“The mass is ended”). There is no other NORM for the mass, other than what the local ordinary (the bishop) establishes within his authority and for his diocese (and only his diocese).

You are teaching something that is not in the GIRM and not established by any bishop that I’m aware of as a norm. If that is the case then, like I said, such norm will be backed by documented teaching on the subject. If it is not, it is a matter of personal piety and devotion and no one is allowed to hold it as binding on anyone else.

In other words, I realize that this is your opinion, but it is an opinion with no force of law whatsoever, and therefore you should not be judging others as lacking respect or piety because they do not cleave to your personal teaching.

Nope. The earlier Sunday Mass is impossible to reach by bus, and too far to walk. And a cab is way out of my price range. Saturday night doesn’t work because I always get off work after Mass has started. So I deal with my mid-morning Mass. And deal with snotty people in my parish.

How come nobody puts this on the “music group” maybe if they were sining prayerful meditative songs rather than something off of a Carlie Simon album then people wouldnt be so eager to leave. Of course maybe they aer singing awesome music where you are, in which case you are lucky. But again I find it odd that after recieveing the Eucharist we are so quick to Judge someones heart just because they leave at a time WHEN THE CHURCH SAYS THEY CAN!

I have only done it once!!! I was at Mass the Monsingor was running over…I left before last hymn only because my car was in shop…and my ride was blocked in a full parking lot…also blocking foot and car traffic… Lol…hey not trying to justify! 😃 just saying that was the only time and it was a halfway valid reason!!!

Good point. Also, if the music leader was paying attention and timed the end of the song for when Father reached the back of the nave, it would solve everyone’s problems. 😃

It’s called a** recessional**. It should either be played while Father and the servers recess and then be over or be played through the time the congregation recesses. It makes no sense to keep playing after Father has exited and not expect the congregation to then begin to exit.

Rude to Jesus in the Tabernacle. It’s also rude by social standards.
How is it rude to Jesus in the Tabernacle to leave once Mass is over? If it is rude to leave Him while the music is playing isn’t it also rude to leave after the music stops? The reverence to the Blessed Sacrament is the same.

This. The music leader hopefully can figure out how long it takes father (usually) to get to the back of the church and only plan enough music for that.

We can have a song session for all 14 verses of everyone’s favorite hymns after the KofC spaghetti dinner. 😃
