I found that books that explain the Catholic faith such as the different Catechisms over the centuries as well as the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas and other theologians old and new have had more impact in my life than reading the Scriptures, at least sensibly. Therefore I have been wondering whether lectio divina can also be used on such writings as well as Scripture. Is it legitimate to do so?

Absolutely. At least, I know many (both religious and non) who do so. For instance, I’ve known of Benedictines that might do that when studying the Rule or writings of their prominent Saints.

I’ve wondered this too. Most of my reading is Scripture but when I’m reading The Imitation of Christ and other spiritual readings I try and approach it similarly.

Yes, it simply is an exercise in meditating on how Christ is working through this in our lives, or what Christ is saying in this text.
