Lector giving Sunday reading from memory

Personally, the idea of a lector memorizing the reading smacks of Pentecostalism. Just how I feel.

But, I always appreciate a lector who is serious about his reading.
 
Many years ago the that time pastor of my territorial church proclaimed the Gospel from heart. It was visible, he even left the ambo.

A few weeks later he removed the missalettes from the pews, and introduce the gender neutral lectionary. (Some years later he was forced to go back to the NAB, but the missalettes were not brought back to the pews, only outside on a shelf so anyone could grab one.

The serious question is: what is the reason to say the reading from heart, which clearly excludes either the obvious vanity, and to show the right to say the words as the reader’s own.

I feel uneasy about
  1. That the people do have a experience of “St. Peter called me a ‘royal priesthood’…’”.
partly because St Peter (1 Pet 2:9) talks about the community, not any individual, and also because the truth is between balanced opposites and the ‘people Church’ concept is abused in our world.
