Lector - Question

I’ve been a lector for over 20 years. I dropped out for a few years, but am considering come back. During the time I was out, the NAB underwent some revisions (more inclusive language) and frankly, I think it is the most clunky, and clumsy version I’ve ever come across. I read RSV-CE for my own private reading, but I’m wondering if I should go back to being a lector since I am so uncomfortable reading the NAB.

To toot my own horn, I am a good reader - my goal is to make myself invisible so that people will hear the reading and not comment on me.

The NAB is approved for use during the Liturgy - it’s not my favorite either - but it is what has been approved; so, if you’re a good reader, I’d say do it - we need all the good lectors we can get in my opinoin, especially those who personally love the Scriptures and care about what they read.

I’m going to. But the NAB is so clunky - last Sunday when I read the passage in Phillipians - Christ though He was in the form of God did not deem equality with God something to be grasped at.

This is one of my favorite readings ever. And the new translation is clumsy as can be. Sigh. I’ll do it, but oh for a better translation.

Are you a reader or a lector?

I am wondering how you can have been a Lector for 20 years. It was my understanding that the 4 minor orders of the priesthood :
Lecotor, Porter, Acolyte, Exorcist were suppressed in the early 1970s? Of those 4 only Lector and Acolyte still exist. WIth that in mind they exist as institutions which don’t really happen very often anymore. I know that Lincoln diocese institutes Lectors and Acolytes. Most parishes don’t have Lectors…but interestingly enough if a parish does have a Lector and that Lector is present at Mass then only He or the priest or the deacon can do the readings.

If you are a reader then nevermind. It is nice to hear that you are a good reader. If you are a male then perhaps you should seek out becoming a Lector. I have a good friend who is a Lector. He takes his institution VERY seriously…He is also an Acolyte which he also takes very seriously. When he is in the sanctuary during Mass he comes across as a very humble servant who takes his job very seriously.
