During the winter months, we have sicknesses all around us. My question is, what are the circumstances under which you should not lector? What sickness would you have to not lector one Sunday?

I’d have to be too sick to attend Mass or have laryngitis (I’ve had that and felt perfectly healthy). Otherwise why wouldn’t I read? Oh, I suppose if I felt like throwing up and didn’t think I could make it through the reading without having to make a mad dash for the washroom, I’d stay in my pew.

A couple of days ago I called another lector to see if she could take my place today, due to larangytis. I mentioned to her that I planned on being at the Mass, but could not trust my voice.

She said okay, and I traded with her and will do her reading next week. 🙂

I would say you shouldn’t come if any of the following are true

  1. *]You are contagious
*]You’re voice is different to the point of being distracting
*]You feel terrible, to the point where it will hinder your reading

Basicly the same guidelines as for attending Mass, plus the voice thing (#2).

  1. *]Tuberculosis
    *]Smallpox
    *]Ebola
    *]Whooping Cough
    *]Duck-call lodged in my windpipe

You have heard it said that it is more blessed to give than to receive.

This does not apply to infections. 😃

the same reason I would not attend church at all, contagious illness, too much hawking and sneezing and coughing, stomach upset to the point of needing to use the facilities frequently, plus for reading, anything that affected my voice badly. To come to church at all with such active symptoms of possible contagious illness is in my mind a mortal sin, to be blunt and honest.

Throat infection (can’t talk); eye/vision problem (can’t see well); pounding headache (can’t concentrate).

Anything affecting your voice, either making it “nasally” due to a stuffy nose or sinuses, or else any kind of sore throat or cough, or any combination of these.

Also, anything that you’d stay home from work with, stay home from Mass with. 😉

AMEN! Why do people insist on hacking and coughing their way through a Mass they are clearly way too sick to attend, and worse still insisting on shaking everyones hand come the Sign of Peace as per usual … ugh, no thanks!
