Aside from being a deep and moving song… the drumming is awesome 👍
So…you think Danny is one of the greatest drummers to walk the planet?

I do, but I went to UMKC @ the same time he did. His drumming sounds like a UMKC percussion recital to me.

Oh absolutely. There may be some drummers that can match his skill (mostly contemporary jazz guys) but he is absolutely unmatched in creativity and independence especially when it comes to rock drumming.

Geddy, Neil, and Alex are the other “Blessed Trinity” I love. 😃

50 year old Rush fan? There’s not a thing wrong with you.
👍 to both statements. I’m a 52 year old Rush fan, and even as I type this I’m listening to ‘Red Barchetta.’ Oops, make that ‘New World Man,’ the song just changed. LOL! I’m not a big fan of some of their newer stuff, but I listen to their older songs on an almost daily basis. Very loudly. Drives my kids nuts–but sometimes I catch them singing along. 😃

Rush is my favorite group, but I’ll have to admit that I haven’t liked much since Roll The Bones. I keep buying their new albums, hoping to hear a new Red Barchetta, but alas, it hasn’t happened yet.

Those same contemporary jazz guys, many of them older, including Billy Cobham, are in AWE of Danny.

I was thinking more like Dave Weckl but regardless it is very understandable… his playing is quite awe inspiring. I’ve seen Tool live twice and watch any videos I can of him playing and it’s just unreal the amount of command he has over his playing.

I always tell myself that if I didn’t have to have a real job and could do THAT for 8 hours a day instead I could be maybe one day be that good… it’s just The Man keeping me down I tell ya!

Dave Lombardo is also really into jazz. I remember reading a drumming magazine years back shortly after his departure from Slayer and at that time he was studying jazz drumming. If I remember correctly he’d said that learning jazz technique helped him with his own drumming and sticking style and helped him refine it even more.

It seems that when you read of musicians sitting down and studying other styles of music they all come back saying it makes them better at what they do. Randy Rhoads, before his death, was learning classical guitar and found that the picking and strumming methods learned there made him a better guitarist. Kirk Hammet still takes guitar lessons and has tried to incorporate those lessons into his own style.

He’s also the best metal drummer EVER!

Interesting point though about studying other styles. I remember some video (I think it was on Metallica’s live **** binge and purge stuff) where Kirk was watching a guy play classical guitar and just looked in complete awe.

Most of these guys are also self-taught and had little formal training – it’s something that seems uniform across the majority of metal guys, no matter what instrument they play. Through trial and error they learn the best way to play that works for what they play, but then when they have the money and time they start to actually take lessons their talents are sort of harnessed and able to be expanded upon in ways they might not have even realized.

Speaking of Lombardo, I remember seeing something where he described his warm up routine which started more than an hour before show time with various stretches and wrist and arm routines to limber up before going on. It was absolutely incredible what he did to get ready.

Never got into them, but I really want to see “the Devil’s Rejects”, but I am resisting the urge big time, just because I do not want to expose myself to that kind of imagery.
House of 1000 Corpses and Devil’s Rejects are 2 of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen. And I’m not easy to disturb.

House of 1000 Corpses is basically an unofficial remake/ripoff of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I didn’t bother seeing Devil’s Rejects because of how much the first one sucked.

Now his remake of Halloween… awesome… the second one… horrid.

As far as Tool goes, I have a problem listening to anyone who, in one of their songs, says or repeats the phrase “Jesus was an imbecile”. I’m not especially prone to violence but if I were to meet this man I would probably have a heavy load to take into the confessional with me that week.

On the subject of Tool’s songs in particular one that might be of interest to those on this forum even those that aren’t fans or find their lyrics questionable is “Right in Two”.

It’s written from the perspective of Angels kind of pondering what they must think of humans.

Aside from being a deep and moving song… the drumming is awesome 👍
You know, I had forgotten about that one…and I agree…Awesome Song. 👍

Ultimately, the best thing about Tool, for ME, is their Videos. NOTHING like them out there among the Ton of predictable Rap and Pop Videos. 👍

Don’t do that, Please. I don’t think even Our Lord and savior would urge You to do that. He had to suffer through a LOT Worse for the Redemption of Our Sins—Worthless Humans that we are. 👍

I do get what you are saying, though. And thanks for reminding me about that Song. I had Forgotten about it. Oh, well…Pray for these People. 🤷😦

Aside from as someone else pointed out Jesus wouldn’t want you to do that… you’ve misheard or probably haven’t heard and are going on hearsay.

“Jesus won’t you ****ing whistle” is the actual line…

As I’ve pointed out numerous times on this forum if you’re going to attack anything (especially with an allusion to violence against a supposed offender) please do so from a more educated standpoint instead of jumping to conclusions based on hearsay and things you THINK are facts.

Look the lyrics up, read them… then read about the band. They state very openly that the lyrics in all of their songs are open to interpretation. However if you don’t get the lyrics right to begin with your interpretation is completely invalid. If you actually read or listened to all of the lyrics instead of making ignorant assumptions it could be anything from something as simple as a song about self hatred to a song written from the perspective of Judas.

And before you or anyone goes off on a tangent about how he obviously supports Judas or the gospel of Judas please remember that there’s this thing called artistic expression. Writing a song or story from someone else’s perspective does not make you a supporter of that person or their ideas. Beyond that the song I mentioned earlier is written from the perspective of Angels. So “Sober” does not relate him to the betrayal of Christ and “Right in Two” does not make him an Angel. He’s an artist.

Oh… and the only time the word imbecile gets used is

“I am just an imbecile”

Actually, I ignored Tool for many years because of “Sober”. “Schism” is what first perked up my ears.

I saw Tool in concert a few years ago. Great show.

I dont listen to them as much anymore.

I mostly listen to more old school metal now.

I agree with the poster who said that if listening to music x leads you into sin or temptation, avoid it. I’d add when there’s plain blasphemy. There’s a video on YT where Tool singer Maynard says the name of Jesus but inserts a vulgar term between Jesus and the Greek term for “the anointed one”. Maynard looks like he’s harboring some major bitterness (personal observation), and he’s trained in some kind of martial arts so it’s unlikely harm could be done to him thru unarmed violence. LZ to me seems pretty harmless (I avoid In My Time of Dying, a song I love but I feel it disrespects Jesus and is, I feel, at times a mockery of some Catholic elements) though Jimmy Page was an avid fan of Crowley and was an occultist, or at least a serious dabbler (serious enough to purchase a house by the Loch Ness formerly owned by Crowley). Backward masking is a joke for gullible fools and so whatever Jimmy believed in, I don’t feel it comes up or shows too much in LZ work. Father John Corapi mentioned in some of his talks that insamuch as sacramentals are blessed, that the reverse (cursing) could be done, he claimed that huge amount of drugs were thus cursed by some satanic “priest” and the same was done in recording studios for music records. Don’t know what to make of Fr. Corapi’s claim in that respect.
