I think what is really weak is to presume that you need to listen to contemporary music in the first place in order to live. There is alot of good gospel and classical music out there that does alot to uplift God. If you know that a certain clothing designer was a racist and a satanist and neo-nazi or someone whose agenda was to see your ethic group destroyed would you buy his/her clothing? I would not buy. Similarly if I know that a rock, rap, pop or any other group members subscribe to or promote in their music any anti-christian ideologies then why would I feel the desire to support or listen to it? I would have to be literally under some sort of influence by the music or musician to embrace this music or defend it in any way.
Frankly some people in this forum seem to be heavily influenced by the music they listen to. To the point that they try to play off witchcraft, occult and pagan practices and beliefs as relates to music and musicians as not satanic - (so therefore itās not bad to listen to their music). This is what I find to be weak.
This is a bit of a misdirect. When did I say one needs to listen to contemporary music in order to really live?

Iām simply pointing out what I preceive to be a very weak argument. Iām not saying that there arenāt
other potentially stronger arguments, but I was not addressing them in my post.
The difference is that music unlike cars or utilities cannot influence someoneās behaviour. Music has been proven to have the ability to create altered states of conciousness and induce certain types of behaviour. There are many studies on the effect of music on the mind by notworthy psychologists and experts (eg. Music the brain and ecstasy - Robert Jourdain) āmusic is the most the immediate of all the artsā.
Quoted Dr. Richard Pellegrino - āTake it from a brain guy, In 25 years of working witht the brain I still cannot affect a personās state of mind the way one simple song can.ā
He wasnāt talking about Chopin or the Benedictine Monks only. He is including the Led Zeps and the ACDCs and Korns as well in that statement.
Okay, but now weāre talking about a completely different argument. My post was really of a very limited scope. My only purpose was to say that this
one argument is a weak one:
donāt patronize musicians that lead sinful lifestyles because you are giving them money to continue their sinful lifestyles.
Itās not workable or are we not wlling to do the work and ensure that we are not party to the sinful acts by listening to things that only glorify the carnal and ignore or mock God and His laws?

Not sure how this relates to my post.
The Church (clergy) does not make any direct pronouncement about a particular group or artist or song. Rather the Church gives guidelines based on scripture and revelation that tell us how to be discerning and how to live good christian lives. But to the contrary Pope John Paul II (God rest his soul), made a pronouncement that catholics should
Okay, now youāre leaving me hanging.

Either you forgot to finish this paragraph or Iām missing something. What is it that JPII said Catholics should do?
EDIT: Okay, I see you edited your post to include āā¦be wary of rock music.ā I would like to see the citation for JPIIās comment. Being vigilant is a good thing, but it doesnāt mean that rock music, as a whole, is evil.
Pope Benedict labeled rock festivals as a ācultic character, a form of worship,ā and declared rock and pop music as āanti-Christian.ā He afterwards, in the epoch of his musical enlightenment, stated that rock is the work of Satan.
Could you reference the quote by Benedict XVI where he says that ārock is the work of Satanā? I own āThe Spirit of the Liturgyā, so you can just give me a page number if you want. Iād like to see it in context.
Iām sure alot of technology and inventions which were invented by satanists and occultists etc are being used to glorify God by good catholics and other christians. How is Led Zepās music being used to do the same? If it isnāt then that is when we need to question what the purpose is. Everything under the sun has a purpose.
Again, now you are getting into a different argument, one which I was not addressing with my post. I would say, though, that the purpose of much contemporary music is simply recreation.
The difference is Joe that we need to eat and brush our teeth and drive and we are using these things to safeguard our bodies which are templed of the Holy Spirit. Does secular music have a place in our list of needs? If anyone can say yes to this question then I would say that it is a need born out of addiction, not a true need. Besides there is other music that was made specifically for worship. Why do we feel because it is hard to avoid most types of music and find good godly music to enjoy that it is not workable or not meant to be?
Okay, then what about things that are
not necessities? TV isnāt necessary. The internet isnāt necessary. Should I not use Microsoft Windows or a hotmail e-mail address if I believe Bill Gates is leading a sinful lifestyle? Should I not buy Chips Ahoy! cookies because they are made by Nabisco, who is owned by Kraft, who is (or at least was) owned by Philip Morris (producer of tobacco products)?
Okay, now Iām veering off of my original argument to make a general comment and get your thoughts on it.

Certainly, everything in our lives should be ordered towards God. Recreation is a legitimate enterprise. But not everything we listen to or watch has to be
explicitly Christian. Would you agree or disagree with that?
