I believe the original problem related to Lefebvere’s disobedience in consecrating bishops without the Vatican’s approval.

To the OP.

I don’t know if SSPX can be said to have split from the Church. They are validly ordained priests and bishops. Their sacraments are valid. They pray for their local ordinary and the Pope at mass. They just insist that Rome has been overtaken by “modernists” and that certain things in Vatiican II and the New Mass are heretical. But I think they mean well for the most part. They have never said they don’t want to be part of the Roman Catholic Church anymore.

ohhh … I guess I thought they split because Lefebvre was excommunicated

I read something about the Pope meeting with the head of the “group” (for lack of a better phrase) and the responce was that they (the Lefebvreites) had “no intention of responding”

If they ordained Preists and Bishops who were not approved by the Vatican - wouldn’t that make them “split” from the church??

I know this is all “old news” now - I just learned of it - I was in a conversation yesterday about the “birth” of churches and Lefebreites were mentioned - the person I was talking to was suprised I did not know anything about it (me being Catholic and all) Guess I kind of live in a shell
