I’m sure I’m the only other one here laughing at the South Park reference.

Alan Greenspan, for one. Some of the leading lights of the Reagan years were alleged to be disciples of Ayn Rand, btw–so she’s not merely a speculative thinker whose ideas have never had much bearing on the world. She has really been quite influential in certain political circles.
Now, back to “Left Behind” . . . . . .
poor illiterate Officer Barbrady
Yeah, I haven’t the vaguest idea who “Officer Barbrady” is nor what he has to do with Ayn Rand or “Atlas Shrugged”. I don’t watch TV very often. Which frequently leaves me out of the cultural loop.I’m sure I’m the only other one here laughing at the South Park reference.
Sorry Flameburns. No one meant any harm against you. Barbrady was an illiterate character on the cartoon South Park and after he learned to read children’s books his prize was a copy of Atlas Shrugged.Yeah, I haven’t the vaguest idea who “Officer Barbrady” is nor what he has to do with Ayn Rand or “Atlas Shrugged”. When I first went on the Internet, courtesy of WebTV, I was under the impression that someone must’ve written a new book or done something on TV regarding the Spear of Longinus, the fabled spear that pierced the side of Christ. At least one book, popular in the 1970’s, suggested that Adolph Hitler’s fantastic rise and fall were in some way related to his possession of this Spear of Longinus.
Chatrooms on TalkCity (an automatic feature of WebTV service in those days) kept making what seemed to be obscure references to this legendary artifact of Christ’s last hours. The Spear has gone by a number of other names over the centuries. My then-11 year-old daughter, however, had to enlighten me to the fact that ‘Brittney Spears’ was NOT one of those names. Which clarified a lot of the puzzling references I was seeing , , , , , ,
We’re still way off the subject of the “Left Behind” novels however.
No harm, no foul Hey, I had explain a literary reference in this very thread . . .we all have our gaps in knowledge.Sorry Flameburns. No one meant any harm against you. Barbrady was an illiterate character on the cartoon South Park and after he learned to read children’s books his prize was a copy of Atlas Shrugged.
If you look around the Net, you can find plenty of harsh criticism for “Left Behind” being virulently anti-Catholic.There is a story in the current issue of “Vanity Faire” about the guy who wrote these books, as well as about the books themselves. This guy sounds like a nut to me and he seems pretty anti-Catholic. Anybody read or heard about this guy/these books? Any thoughts, comments? I know that they are hugely popular in Protestant circles and as I’m the only Catholic in my family I’d like to be prepared should any body bring these books up. Thanks.
You say “juvenile” but I say “quick read”If you look around the Net, you can find plenty of harsh criticism for “Left Behind” being virulently anti-Catholic.
If you look a bit further around the Net, you can also find plenty of harsh criticism for “Left Behind” NOT being virulently anti-Catholic ENOUGH! :whacky: LaHaye is only mildly nutty compared to some of these other guys.
And, yes, I read the first 9 or 10 books before giving up and found the writing to be juvenile at best.
