My husband’s pastor gave him a LOT of chrism left over from Confirmation, with the instructions to burn it. He asked how, & the priest didn’t give him any concrete answer.

Does anyone know the if there is a special rite for this, or exactly what we have to do?

Did a lookup on the internet and found this:
What is the proper way to dispose of old Holy Oils?
What confuses me is that he was given these now for disposal. The oils are not usually consecrated (I think that is the word) until the Thursday before Easter. Another problem I see is who should really be responsible for this. I normal layperson without any training seems not to be the appropriate person.

Holy Chrism should not be out of the priests possession. It should be burned in an oil lamp. Traditionally the sanctuary lamp was an oil lamp and the old oils were burned in it.

Sue,

Here’s the approach that we use in our parish. At the Easter Vigil we take all the oils that are left, soak cotton balls in it, and then burn the cotton balls in the new fire (we use a large bonfire). Although messy, it does burn everything and there is no left-over oil.

That makes 3 of us (you, my husband, and me).

I think he’s going to take them back & ask the pastor to handle it the way Deacon Ed described.
