The problem is that these books are under copyright. The university does not have the right or the authority to determine if a book is an “orphan” or not. How would you like for literally tens of thousands of students and faculty having access to a book that you spent years working on without any recompense? This is far different than making a copy of a cd for a friend; this undermines the entire publishing industry.

The illegal scanning was done to make a profit and to defy laws.
Actually, it was done to make supposed “orphan” works available to students and teachers. I did not read that it was done to make a profit. In any event, it still undermines the nature of the publishing industry.
