This is one suite I hope Google wins. It has been a great boon to research and the reading public. It has put into our hands priceless works that we would never have had the chance to read or study. It has helped the advance of knowledge.

The problem is that these books are under copyright. The university does not have the right or the authority to determine if a book is an “orphan” or not. How would you like for literally tens of thousands of students and faculty having access to a book that you spent years working on without any recompense? This is far different than making a copy of a cd for a friend; this undermines the entire publishing industry.

I have to disagree. Before the internet, I had access to two great libraries, and continued to use them. I don’t think knowledge has advanced that much because books are scanned without the permission of copyright holders. The illegal scanning was done to make a profit and to defy laws.

Actually, it was done to make supposed “orphan” works available to students and teachers. I did not read that it was done to make a profit. In any event, it still undermines the nature of the publishing industry. The illegal scanning was done to make a profit and to defy laws.
