About 8 years ago I did research from the 50s and 60s of what Priests said about drugs during that cultural upheaval. The way we judge drugs is vis a vis wine. That means cannabis is a little less inebriation and is not morally evil. It is legalizing all acceoss the country. My opinion is that we should copy Portugal’s drug laws, which don’t treat drug users as criminals. All drugs are decriminalized in Portugal, and they treat using as a health issue. Wine is central in our Religion. Wine is a strong drug. We are not Puritans.

I agree 100%. One who partakes in ANYTHING: drugs, sex, alcohol, athletics, construction, writing, are all human - as it is the use of our human faculties which allow us to do those things.

And so why should we say that someone with a problem with drugs is a criminal? No. They have a problem. They need help, and it is our duty to love our neighbour. Why do we stick people in prisons? Take them off the streets, put them into a building full of other people involved in crime, let them out, build new connections, further criminal networks. It does not work, and punishment for addiction (as some define it) only worsens the problem.

It’s one of the greater injustices of our day, the drug war. It is a vestige of our Puritan roots. Our country would be so strong if we did not create that criminal class. Portugal has the plan.

Alcohol and THC are two very different compounds! Within 10hours alcohol is undetectable and out of your system; however, THC can be detected for up to a week from blood tests! Sorry, I’ll take a shot over a joint anytime. Remember, “Hugs Not Drugs.”

I think marijuana is a gateway drug. To confess, I know from experience (thankfully little though it may be). I do not think it can be compared to wine, the effects are quite different.

It can impair your thinking and judgment and reason in small amounts, and is therefore not good.

The duration of the effects of cannabis are on par with alcohol, despite what stays in your blood, or hair.

We should be careful to take our whole purview from formation of Church teaching when speaking of morals of things, and not a little bit from the Church, and a little bit from a Puritan propaganda.

Pope Francis said about marijuana
Attempts, however limited, to legalize so-called ‘recreational drugs,’ are not only highly questionable from a legislative standpoint, but they fail to produce the desired effects
Drug addiction is an evil, and with evil there can be no yielding or compromise
To think that harm can be reduced by permitting drug addicts to use narcotics in no way resolves the problem
And what does it do?
The Limbic system of the brain is what’s most affected by the use of marijuanna. The Limbic system deals with emotion, behavior, motivation, long-term memory, and sense of smell and time. When used, the drug causes both physical and psychological effects on the person, from high heart rates and slowed reaction time to short-term memory loss, anxiety and depression.

Catholics should avoid the phrase “recreational.” As Catholics, we can not drink wine recreationally, but that is a tolerated phrase, at least by me. Addiction and the “scientific psychology” behind what many psychologists call today “addiction,” is not really 100 percent Catholic.

And if a drug is addictive, like, you really can’t live without it, we should treat that as a health problem like Portugal, not lock them up in big expensive American prisons. They are some of he most vulnerable people of our society. They should be treated with compassion.

Okay, but what do you take it to mean by recreationally?

Pope John II acknowledged no difference between using “hard” and “soft” drugs, saying marijuana and heroin were in the same category and shouldn’t be legalized.

The Church teaching is fairly clear on legalization of drugs, it is a big no.

There is an official guide which notes that the legalization even of “soft” drugs is not an answer, because no one has the right to harm himself through the use of drugs. The conclusion remains, “whether drugs are illegally purchased or distributed by the State, they are always harmful to man” and the gift of life.

Recreational: “relating to or denoting activity done for enjoyment when one is not working.”

So I can’t go for a drink with my coworkers after work?! I can’t enjoy beer and wine tasting? I don’t hear people raving about marijuana’s subtle oak flavor or fruitiness.

They don’t because the THC set their brain on slow motion mode, and the neural connections are just not running on all six cylinders.

It’s in Denizger. You can’t eat or drink for recreation. You can do it for social purposes or for health purposes, but not recreation. It’s happening all over the world. We have recreational cannabis in Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Washington DC, and as of Jan. 1st, California. Also as of Jan. 1st, all of Canada. Walk in, if your over 21, purchase no problem.

Yes, they do talk about those flavors in cannabis. There are millions of legal recreational users in the United States right now. Also, Nevada has legalized for recreational adult use, cannabis.

Cannabis is a little less inebriation than wine in my experience, and to use to relax, medicinally, just like a glass of wine, it’s no problem.

2290 “The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.”
I go by the Catechism. You cannot be excessive with anything! You’re not supposed to be higher than a kite or stumbling drunk. By your definition, there won’t be any ice cream eating contests either lest they be considered recreational!
