Agreed! But what does that have to do with anything I said? Or are you saying that Catholicism is Skinnerian? That’s absurd!

That is why I believe that talk of heaven (reward) and hell (punishment) is anti-spiritual. It reduces God to an object, whose use is our own advancement. If my wife told me that she loved me because I am wealthy, I would not feel loved. I would merely be a tool (object) whose purpose is similar to my car’s (to faciltate the satisfaction of wants and desires).
I think talk of heaven and hell is a misunderstanding of the Bible’s message. It reduces scripture to the level of Skinnerian psychology. Christ was not a Skinnerian!
Google, “B.F. Skinner.”
My friend, I think you are misunderstanding the Bible and you may have some serious misunderstandings about Catholicism. Here’s 1 John 4:18 after it talks about how God is love:
"There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love. "

Doing right ONLY because we’re afraid of Hell is spiritual immaturity and an indication that we’re not that close to God. Doing right ONLY because of our reward in heaven is selfish and prideful. Neither one of these ideas is what The Church teaches. In fact, quite the contrary. We want to go to heaven because we love God so much, we want nothing more than to spend eternity in his company! And we want to serve God on Earth because we trust in his will over our own. Heaven and Hell are very real, despite our personal preference as to their existence.

Now back to the topic! Without debating gay “marriage,” you can see how redefining marriage opens it up to any assortment of relationships, some seen as less valid than others. If marriage is everything, then marriage is nothing.
While the show in the OP seems silly now, years from now that will be a real possibility. Why don’t you think a human should legally marry a robot? If you don’t like robot marriage, don’t get robot married, but don’t take away someone’s right to love what they want! After all, robot marriages don’t hurt anyone. Your preconceived notions as to what marriage is, is the problem, and your arbitrary definitions are imposing on someone else’s freedom.

You can’t say the love I feel for my toaster is less than the love you feel for your human wife!! Okay, now I’m being absurd, but you get the idea. 😛

I wouldn’t be too firm on that consciousness standard, either. Several years ago, the final in my Cognitive Neuroscience class had to do with artificial intelligence, and the possibility of creating consciousness in computers, given the similarities in processing between brains and computers and the increasing sophistication and complexity of technology… etc. etc. I won’t bore you with the details, but in the future, you will have a case made for AI consciousness and difficulty disputing it since we can never experience or qualitatively analyze another’s consciousness.

See post 41 and others
I never said that reward and punishment is the central message of Catholicism. Actually I said the opposite in response to posters that believe they are Catholic and espouse a doctrine opposite of Catholicism.

As for AI becoming conscious, I am a strong believer in qualia. As a matter of fact my seminar paper at university was a refutation of Dennet’s “Quining Qualia.”

Response to post 35, your first statement.
You are confused. If there is,or is not a heaven and hell has NOTHING to do with what we are talking about. However, using threats (of hell) and rewards (heaven) is Skinnerian psychology. Jesus was not a Skinnerian. His message was not, do good, believe in God or he will torture you.
I don’t see anyone using threats of heaven or hell. Heaven is just staying with the necessities of eternal life (God) and reaping the results. No one appears to have suggested that God taunts us or threatens us with damnation in order to keep us in line. Hell is a consequence of abandoning a spiritual necessity (God). As creatures made in God’s image and likeness, a good life must stem from Him and a bad life must stem from moving away from Him.

Nobody has argued Christ was a Skinnerian, so your refutation is a moot point and, frankly, I don’t see how it’s relevant to this topic.

Your original argument in this thread was that the comparison of robot marriage and gay marriage was false and illogical. My post was a response to yours to show the connection between the two. What do you think?

Robots may not be conscious (yet), but a properly designed robot might at least be able to engage in marital relations, whereas same sex couples are inherently incapable of engaging in marital relations. Opposite sex couples are designed for marital relations; thus a conjugal, relationship is possible for them, as is marriage.

My original point was by Redifining marriage which is actually even notable at some level in animals (wolves, eagles…To name a few.)

People are opening the flood gates to chaos. Polygamy, animal or the marriage to objects which the show I watched was promoting and said thier president was “gay so called marriage”

Response to post 35. (second statement you made)
Please read my posts before posting. In particular post 32, where you quoted me, accurately, but did not understand what was in front of your face. In particular start reading from," One can argue that any conscious enity…"
Whats the point in debating when all you do is misrepresent my position and then attack the straw men that you created?
No straw man. I pointed out that your definition is too limiting.

Response to post #10.

You arbitrarily claim being conscious is some norm we must obey? Why? That is a bigoted standard.

Last night when flipping the channels I came upon a show that was promoting the idea of robot marriage for (not kidding)

They where using the president for gay marriage to push thier ideas and said there are 1000’s of men wanting to marry robots in the US right now and 2 companies are working and life like women robots.
As if they have emotions…
What’s next, marrying chimps? After all, we are said to have the same ancestry.

What a Slippery and STEEP slope mankind is traveling on. Gay “marriage”, robot “marriage”,I fear what the next “Marriage” will involve.

Pssst…the devil does not exist

Pssst…Its not really bad/wrong if its enjoyed and does not “hurt” anyone

Pssst…Hell does not really exist because a loving God would not send His children
to spend eternity in torture

These are just some of the BIGGEST lies that the evil one uses. Convince people that Wrongs are now RIGHTS and to believe differently (ie…God’s TRUTH) is to be a bigot, hatemonger or not politically correct in todays society,( BTW…to be politically correct is to lack Love and Charity of neighbor).

Like St. Paul stated in scripture,Pray without ceasing. Pray that we as a human race, return to the loving and outreached arms of our loving Saviour. Pray that we all come to realize that God’s ways are better then ours and He knows what is best for us.👍

😉 That darn Rod Serling. " Let your imagination run wild he says, it’ll be great TV"!

“But what if people snap up some of these flapdoodle ideas and adopt them as a lifestyle”? I says.

Serling laughs, “Sooner will gay men try to marry in a church then that should happen!”

So now he’s gone and we’ve got this on the horizon! 🤷

Don’t know what I’m talking about? He started the whole idea with this episode!

A future criminal is marooned on a planet - but a liberal government gives him a robot woman as a companion. Later he is pardoned, but his beloved robot cannot come back with him.

Jack Warden, Jean Marsh - actually a thought provoking piece and G-rated. 😉

I heard it is already happening in Stepford, Connecticut .
Joanna Eberhart (Nicole Kidman) is a successful reality television executive producer. She is fired after her latest project, a show where spouses choose between each other or prostitutes called I Can Do Better, results in one of the jilted men going on a shooting spree, and she has a nervous breakdown. With her husband Walter (Matthew Broderick) and their two children, they move from Manhattan to Stepford, a quiet Connecticut suburb.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA are you sure you weren’t just watching a parody on Comedy Central, this sounds something like Jon Stewart would do! If it is real on the other hand, I guess we know the stories that will be showing on Jerry Springer in the next few years. :rotfl:
