Legalize Sodomy?

To be more precise, the UCMJ prohibits sodomy, which is unlawful whether same sex or opposite sex. Sodomy, according to the UCMJ is defined as “unnatural carnal copulation with canother person of the same or opposite sex or with an animal.”

For example,

In 1992, the consensual sodomy case against Airman Fagg (no joke) was upheld on appeal. Appearantly, “By his own unabashed account, the accused, an 18-year-old airman, cut a rather wide swath through the pubescent female population of Altus, Oklahoma, in his first year after basic training. … Ironically, it was the accused’s jilted 16-year-old partner in sodomy who reported him to the police, after he had left her first for another 16-year-old and then for the 14-year-old.”

Who did it harm? Such actions often lead to other things like homocide, un-wed pregnancy, emotional disorders, increased promiscuity, sexually transmitted diseases, etc. It is a harm to society. In this case, the 16-year-old was appearantly emotionally harmed by this horny young man tossing her to the side in his quest to have his way with many a young teenage girl.

I have a 13-year old girl, so I suppose I can see the harm such “consensual” activity may have on society. Privacy ought not to be a shield against activities that can and do harm society.

You’re not Catholic, are you?
Zange,

What he said has nothing to do with being Catholic or not, he said the STATE should not be dictating what happens in someone’e bedroom between consenting adults. I agree!!

The Catholic Church to my knowledge does not teach that the United States Government should be involved in what happens in the bedroom between two consenting adults.

The Church and our faith in God should be involved, but not senators and judges.

Like I said before, yes, I am Catholic and glad of it. Just linking sodomy & gay marriage as one and the same. You legalize one, makes the other legal…so cannot legalize either one!

I thought the Supreme Court did legalize Sodomy when they threw out the Texas law a few months back.

Some people feel harmed by a particular action while others don’t. Those who don’t feel harmed will engage in it. Those that do feel harmed won’t.That is the world of reality.

Perhaps the world of theology needs to visit the world of reality.
You question the source of Revelation. The source is Jesus Christ and His Church through His Tradition, His Scripture, and His Magesterium. This is the source of Truth. The beauty of God’s message of love and free will is that you and noone else is required to believe this truth and no Christian is to require you to do so. However, it is a Christian’s duty to evangelize and spread the truth and to participate in government so that laws that reflect this truth are put into place. Those that do not understand and live this Truth face spiritual crisis.

Your argument that those that want to participate in an activity will and those that do not want is extraordinarily simplistic and unrealistic. The world of reality, through history, has shown us that when bad things happen to individuals or groups, usually following a dulling of the conscience through immoral behavior, those individuals and groups gradually lose their freedom and become victims of lost dignity - with their rights to life and liberty taken from them. In this case, they no longer have choices.

Just a few examples: children without mothers and fathers; Jews in concentration camps; Christian martyrs in China and many other countries; young men and women with life threatening diseases because they were told it was ok to have safe-sex; slaves in the history of the United States and other countries; human trafficking that occurs today which preys on children and young women.

I could go on and on - your simplistic interpretation of defining morality and how laws should be decided upon does not work - it appears fine in a safe country with lots of freedoms and lots of money - however it is always an incredible failure spiritually and always leads to mental and physical failures. This is why God’s laws are what they are and this is why he gave us Revelation - because He loves and cares for us more than we do ourselves.

Goodness gracious, I go away for a long weekend and people are setting up strawmen like a murder of crows are coming to town and they are preparing for the influx. As such, I am not going to comment on each and every point, I am going to sum up and bow out as it becomes infuriating after awhile and I think there are much more important things to discuss than what happens in other peoples bedrooms. Falwell and Phelps types aren’t worth the aggravation and I have trouble holding my tongue.

Anal sex is not practiced by all homosexuals. To call it gay sex is a misnomer, not to mention ignorant. Many married couples practice it as well, as well as non-married hetero couples.

If one can not distinguish the difference between sexual relations between consenting adults and such things as pedophilia, beastiality and murder, then you need not only need professional mental help but also need to stay away from children, animals and guns. Especially my children and pets because obviously your judgement can not be trusted.

Commonality does not equal causation. While biblical laws and laws made by the government may have be similar, it does not automatically mean they have the same roots.

Morals are not static, even biblical morals. For example, slavery and mixed racial marriages. So much for our forefathers insight.

Sodomy does not equal gay marriage. These are seperate issues.

The government has no place enforcing laws stickly on religious grounds.

As a married, male Catholic who’s never had to struggle with this particular sin and finds anal sex distasteful, I have no dog in this fight. But it is not my place to sit in judgement of others. I have my own sins to worry about without sitting around imagining what others adults are doing in the privacy of the bedroom. As a freedom loving American, I absolutely oppose government enforcement of religious laws. I do not want the morality police knocking down my door while being intimate with my wife, whatever that intamacy entails. This is America, not Saudi Arabia, and I want to keep it that way.

I agree - I don’t want the morality police knocking down my door either. This is America and people are free as long as they do not displace the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness of others.

However, to absolutely oppose the govenrment enforcement of “religious” laws is an entirely different issue. As for me, I want my government to be informed with the Truth as much as possible - not informed with the teaching of Mohammed, but with the Truth of Jesus who was, is and always will be God. Mohammed did not allow people to worship other gods than Allah. Christianity does allow people to worship as they please - but Christians, in good conscience should suggest the goodness of natural law to the public and the government as something that would be beneficial to implement.

Your definition of “religious” laws is different than someone else’s. You may say sodomy falls into that category today - tomorrow someone will say that it is a “religous” law that protects the dignity of a person and therefore you have no right to withold his ability to earn an income through slave trade just because you have a religious belief.

Freedom comes from God and is subordinate to God’s natural law. Freedom cannot trump natural law because natural law is the source of freedom. What we have to be very careful of is legalizing license - that which allows anyone to do anything regardless of it’s impact on fellow man. This is where the line is drawn - when an immoral activity negatively impacts other individuals or groups of people or society at large - it needs to be reigned in. If it is not reigned in then it infringes on the freedom of others.

Alot of what you say is true, some not. All one needs to be concerned with is who sees us do these things…and God sees everything, even all private things.

Yeah, uh… You don’t get to use your fancy book of mythology to decide what me and my boyfriend/future husband can and can’t do in bed. That’s not how the world works and the sooner you figure that out the better off you’ll be.

People are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and all shades in-between, and they don’t stop existing just because you and your “Jesus” decided that they were icky.

Just as you’re not Muslim and therefore don’t pray to Mecca five times a day, I’m not Christian and I don’t have to bend to your homophobic “morals” and you sure as hell can’t make me.

Just a heads up.

Calm down. There is plenty of mental arithmetic in this post that would warrant, if taken to its natural conclusion, throwing every moral “baby” out with its bath water. You’re barely two steps away from arguing for moral anarchy.

People form societies by mutual consent, but even by mutual consent societies are inevitably going to come up with moral codes that not everyone likes. Where to draw that line may be up in the air, but–just a heads up–your attitude that society has no say in what morals you are expected to live by is more than a little naïve, even for the more ardent secularist. The separation of church and state does not give you the right to demand that everyone pretend they have no religion while in the civic arena.

You might also want to be a little more diplomatic about your characterization of religion when you decide to post on a religious web site. If you cannot even be nice, do not hope to gain any adherents to your point of view.
