Driving. How can you tell if someone is “too high to drive?”

Until there is some device to determine this, I don’t think marijuana should be legalized. There are enough traffic accidents and deaths every year, we don’t need to add a new legalized drug to the mix. I am also in favor of putting devices to test blood alcohol level in new cars. This would help reduce thousands of injuries and fatalities each year.

If there was a way to tell if someone is too high to drive, fine. If you’re an adult and want to smoke pot, have fun. Just don’t give it to kids (under 18/21) and it’s good. This is a free country and people should be allowed to make their own choices… just not in a way that puts others at risk. 👍

I am in favor of legalization. I am concerned about driving and any other activity that might harm anybody.

High school kids are already using this, I don’t know how – isn’t it expensive?

I would smoke at home maybe for a few minutes, as I would drink a small glass of red wine every day (resveratrol in red wine and red grapes to fight cancer).

I would only use it very conservatively. You also have to know how it affects all medication you may happen to be taking.

This isn’t a good, solid argument but I think it literally stinks.

The vast majority of marijuana being smoked today is skunk which is substantially more potent than the pot smoked in the past. There are now far more studies concluding that skunk does indeed scramble the brain (my layman’s expression).

There is no such thing as anyone using a recreational drug conservatively. If anyone tells you that they are lying.
Please do not bring up tobacco or alcohol and try to compare them with proscribed drugs.

This is a horrible argument. People are already smoking crack. Should that be legal too? There are people killing people. Should murder be legal too? Just because it is already happening (illegally) does not mean it should be legalized. 🤷

so your saying marijuana is a highly addictive drug and it can’t be possibly be used as a recreational type drug almost everyone who would use it would be addicted to it and smoke it every single day

Read this study done by the US dept. of transportation.

druglibrary.org/schaffer/misc/driving/driving.htm

A quote from the study:

*THC’s effects on road-tracking after doses up to 300 g/kg never exceeded alcohol’s at bacs of 0.08 g%; and, were in no way unusual compared to many medicinal drugs’ (Robbe, 1994; Robbe and O’Hanlon, 1995; O’Hanlon et al., 1995). Yet, THC’s effects differ qualitatively from many other drugs, especially alcohol. Evidence from the present and previous studies strongly suggests that alcohol encourages risky driving whereas THC encourages greater caution, at least in experiments. Another way THC seems to differ qualitatively from many other drugs is that the former’s users seem better able to compensate for its adverse effects while driving under the influence. *

does anyone have a good argument against it?
For me, it’s a bit of a conflicting subject. In one hand people are going to do it either way, you never hear about somebody high on Marijuana killing people, and generally people do it in their homes in private. But the Bible says to obey the law of the land. I guess you can say I’m neutral, I’m okay with it being legal just as I’m okay with it being illegal.

There is hardly any normal cannabis smoked nowadays. Its mainly skunk people smoke which is more addictive and harmful both short term and long term.
Anyone who would smoke this is an idiot!

"One thing that’s also worrying health professionals is the increased use of skunk. Skunk is a strong form of cannabis that has much higher levels of THC than usual – average cannabis (hash or weed) about 2–4%, whereas skunk is more like 10–14%.

The effects are similar to cannabis, but much stronger and faster. Some people report that they’re closer to the effects of drugs like LSD – more like a trip than being stoned."

This is kind of silly. First of all “skunk” is just one type of weed. Weed is far more potent than it used to be, but not everyone is smoking the potent stuff. You can go to any city and find the 2-4% thc weed around. It will be full of seeds and stems.

Anyway, THC can have hallucinogen type qualities but only if someone smokes a lot and they don’t have a tolerance for it. It is the same with drinking. There are plenty of people that can have 10 or more drinks and hold a conversation with someone. Then there are people that rarely drink that would be throwing up for a day if they drank that much.

So far you have quoted no actual studies stating the effects marijuana has on the brain. I can tell you one thing though: No one that has actually looked at research would ever say that marijuana is more harmful to the body than alcohol, tobacco, or many prescription drugs.

Well that would certainly be the opinion of potheads!!

That’s your reply? So you have no real data or comeback, and resort to name calling. nice.

Fact of the matter is, marijuana is a natural substance - a plant. Technically for someone to use it, all they need to do is put a bud in a pipe and smoke. or eat it.
Whereas other drugs need a certain amount of processing or the additive of other chemicals to be effective.

It’s funny how non-smokers on here are quick to decide that it should remain illegal, while alcohol remains legal, and also a proven killer. To overdose on pot, is almost impossible. You’d fall asleep before you got near that point.

That is an ad hominem in its worse form.

As someone who has never smoked marijuana, I can understand the arguement for legalizing it, mainly, as the OP suggests, I have never seen a good reason for making it illegal. The DUI issue is a valid point, yet we have alcohol legal despite the argument. Use of any drug might make one more suseptible to more dangerous drugs. But again liquor does the same thing.

I think it is just as valid to go back to Prohibition as it is to legalize marijuana. I really have no objection to either.

What about marijuana used for medical purposes?
I know people who use it to alleviate pain.
They point out that you only smoke just enough to counteract the pain.
They can control they’re dosage so that they do not become “potheads”.

My brother died of a rare & typically fatal cancer (malignant pheochromocytoma) after a 6 year battle with it.
Steve Kubby has lived for 40 years with this same cancer. He has used marijuana specifically to battle the cancer.
For the next 25 years, Kubby claimed to control the symptoms of his disease solely by smoking medical marijuana and by maintaining a healthy diet. His original doctor, an expert on this condition shocked to learn he was still alive, said, “In some amazing fashion, this medication has not only controlled the symptoms of the pheochromocytoma, but in my view, has arrested its growth.”

The uses of marijuana from a medical perspective are vast - from alleviating pain to battling cancer .
I am angry that our government chooses to ignore it for these purposes preferring to keep people in agony.

legalizing marijuana and legalizing medical marijuana are two completely different fights and two completely different issues

legalizing marijuana and legalizing medical marijuana are two completely different fights and two completely different issues
The government doesn’t considered them different fights.
Steve Kubby was arrested for his use of medical marijuana.
They denied him access to it while in jail and as a result he became very ill.
In 1999, Kubby and his wife Michele were arrested and faced trial for growing his own cannabis in his home, though he was entitled to do so legally on behalf of himself and his wife, also a licensed cannabis patient.
…
In jail for 72 hours after the arrest, Kubby was deprived of medical marijuana and became seriously ill. His blood pressure shot up to dangerous levels. USC Medical Center’s Dr. Vincent DeQuattro. who made Kubby’s original diagnosis, wrote a letter to the court explaining Steve’s condition and warning the judge what could happen if Steve was further deprived of cannabis. Steve Kubby - arrest & trial

Until the government realizes the difference between the two fights, they continue to bind them together and to keep people in unnecessary agony.

Now this I can comment on. Whenever anyone is arrested, their medical care ceases to be under their control and resorts to the that of the staff of the institution. Any institution has the right to make decisions based on legitimate interests, and keeping marijuana out of correctional facilities is a legitimate interest. Now I know his doctors testified it was a medical necessity because of his fatally incurable cancer, but it his treatment is not their decision when he is in jail or prison.

Oh, and it wasn’t just marijuana he was arrested for. It was also peyote and psychadelic mushrooms.

Oh, and he took it for his fatal cancer for three decades and counting. Perhaps his experts weren’t so expert after all.

Interesting article on a study about psychadelic mushrooms and its effect on the fatally ill. As someone that has indulged in this substance a lot it makes a lot of sense.
