Hi. I found an ESPN website that is available free for access on school campuses. However, what I am doing is connecting to my school’s virtual private network from off-campus (home) and then watching the content of the website. Is this legal? Is it ethical?

Call someone on campus who deals with this to get the answers.

Peace,
Ed

As a black man I have dealt with many legal and ethical problems questions about crime. Yours is not a crime you have to worry about legally. Nobody cares.

Ethically, if you do it, you are hurting yourself by sinning. Hope you decide on heaven instead of hell!

Are you a member of the campus? If you are a student, you are given access to the network. I’m pretty sure just anyone can’t access the network, only authorized users.

Ask at your school.

Ya, I am a student. As long as I am in the school’s internet network, I have free access to this channel. What I am doing is connecting to the school’s network (who wants to go to school just to watch some football game) from home via the VPN client that I have.

Here’s what seems obvious to me:
  1. As a student you have permission to use the school’s network.
  2. They allow use of the network for non-educational reasons (otherwise they wouldn’t carry ESPN3 or whatever it is you’re watching)
Therefore I don’t think you’re doing anything objectively wrong (i.e. stealing). I don’t think the VPN factors into the equation as long as you’re not violating any school rules by using it to access their network.

You sound like you may be concerned that you’re not using your time and resources properly. That’s an issue between your and your conscience and possibly someone who knows you more intimately.
