Legion of Mary

An older parishoner has asked me several times to join the Legion of Mary. I’ve seen some of the information on their website, but I’m wondering if anyone is a member, and typically what does this entail? This is not your normal parish group where you show up when you feel like it-I know that. I’m interested, but wondering.

I am glad that you are interested in the Legion of Mary. I am currently a member of the Legion of Mary. The group that I have joined is a young adult group. We meet every Friday to pray the rosary and do some short spiritual reading. During the weekday, each of the members should do some community services such as visiting nursing home, helping the parish, praying for others, etc …

This group has helped me more dedicated to praying the rosary for others. It has also helped me develop my relationship with Virgin Mary in many things I do. She is the One who definitely helps us closer to Jesus.

I question the amount of time required. If I do join, I want to do it whole-heartedly. I work full time and then am on call at times, whereas if I made a committment to be somewhere working for our Blessed Mother, I might have to chose work at that time. I already pray the rosary daily, pray the Divine Mercy, go to daily Mass, am active in local church life as time permits, am a lector at daily Mass and Sunday Mass, and am going to be helping with RCIA instruction. So I just want to find out what time committments are required.

Hi Bankerdavid, they say if you want something done, ask a busy person!
I belong to the Legion of Mary and I have to say it is one of the most fulfilling things I do. It is a wonderful synthesis of prayer and action. In our praesidium we have people who work full time, look after children, and still manage to fit in their Legion work.
Typically, a meeting should last between an hour to an hour and a half, and it is recommended that the practical work should be a couple of hours on top. Most of us meet up on a Sunday afternoon to do our work (visiting sick people in hospital) but those that can’t do other work at times that suit them. It’s quite flexible.
I would recommend you go along to a meeting and see what you think, accompany members in their practical work and see how you like it. Talk to the president of your local praesidium.
Of course there will be times when you can’t make meetings, but don’t let that put you off.

At this point, yeah, more than two hours a week, but if I were to join LOM, it would be (to me) on top of what I already do. Some other issues, our ‘local’ praesidium is about 45 minutes from my home, so add travel time to the two hours, and you get the idea, it’s a large committment. I may wait until there’s one closer to my parish.
