I was a little kid when V-II reforms came in, and I still do a lot of “old-fashioned” things. Like not eating meat in Friday. This Lent, I thought I might benefit from giving up fish, as well, on Friday. (I’ve never quite understood the distinction between “meat” and “fish” anyway.)

So I had vegetarian Lenten Fridays. I liked it! (I’m not a vegan or vegetarian usually.) I think I’ll keep it up for a while.

Have any of you ever decided to extend your Lenten sacrifices into the rest of the year?

Yes, I have decided to keep going to daily mass when possible. It really is a good thing for me.

Cutting out certain sweets worked fine during Lent, but not so much now!

I tried to give up cursing. I could continue trying, but I think I set myself up for failure.🤷

Yes, for a Christian dedicated to a closer walk with God, self-denial should never be seasonal. It’s the idea of fat vs thin. Being full and contented does not cause one to rely much or trust on things supernatural; a yearning and wanting, a hunger if you will, can more readily recognize the superficial in order to appreciate the deeper.

Last year I started spending 5 minutes sitting on the floor by my bed and practicing presence of God every night. I would often examine my conscience in this time, too. I have managed to keep doing this, for the most part, and I find it is very spiritually enriching.

I abstained from alcohol during my first Lent as a member in full communion with the Church (4 years ago), and have not had a drink of alcohol with the exception of wine consecrated as the precious blood for Eucharistic celebrations.

I revived my old practice of praying the Rosary every day, and have [for the most part] continued.

Actually the Church never did away with abstaining from meat on all Fridays. If you choose to eat meat on non-Lenten Fridays you still have to substitute some other form of penance. Generally I stick with meatless Friday all year round, mainly because I am usually not imaginative enough to come up with a suitable substitute. [Plus I really like meat].

I tried to give up cursing during Lent too, and I’ve gotten a little better. At least I generally don’t curse at people other than myself. I figure the apostles probably cursed, especially the fishermen.
