Lent....help please

Heres yet another chance for you guys to educate me about something Catholic. Can someone please explain Lent to me? I realize this prolly seems like a dumb question but in my boredom I was thinking about religion (weird thing to do for someone like me I know) and I realized that I really don’t know what Lent is all about or the history behind it. If anyone cares to explain anything including personal viewpoints and experiences I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
 
If you repost this question on the Spirituality sub-board, I think you’ll get more responses. This particular sub-board is mostly discussions debating a preference for the Mass in the old Latin form.
