ok, so i know that on Sundays we don’t have to continue our penance for lent. but someone told me in passing that we can do that on Saturday night as well, is that true? if so what time?

also i’ve been thinking, is it at all sinful for someone to be looking for these “loop-holes” so they can do what they gave up for lent?

I think you can begin it Saturday night if you attend the Saturday Vigil Mass. I gave up quite a few things, but I won’t go back to the candy. Too hard. However, I don’t watch TV during the week. so I do watch a few I recorded on Sunday.

I don’t believe it would be sinful looking for the loop holes, but maybe what you gave up is too difficult for you. It might be easier for you to give something up each day. Remember when we are fasting (from food, Tv or whatever) you shouldn’t be grumpy. If you are, take a minute and see if what you gave up isn’t right for you. You may want to pray more for example or say an extra Rosary.

Your personal Lenten penance is entirely that–personal. You can set up whatever terms you wish. You may choose to give up something, such as eating sweets or meat, except on Sundays, or to give up something the entire time. YOu can choose to observe it by adding additional prayer time or other devotion, daily Mass attendance, or some other way, too. How you choose to keep it is up to you. If you fail, you simply pick it back up where you left off and try again. You can even choose to modify your practice if you find it doesn’t work out well. Meanwhile, the Church has set particular guidelines that we MUST keep. In the US that is to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday if you are between the ages of 18 and 59 and there are no health reasons barring you from keeping the fast, and abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays of Lent if you are over the age of 14.
