I gave up bread and chocolate for lent, and also not eating meat on fridays. However, today I ended up staying late to work because someone called in so I had to work later than planned. I didn’t have much to eat , and my manager offered to get sandwiches for us, so I said sure. I ended up eating the sandwich (turkey) and it was friday! So, basically I ate bread and meat! I broke both. I remembered after a little while, and I felt sooo bad! But it was totally by accident. I’m just mad I didn’t realize it!! I think I just wanted to eat something bc I fainted before at work bc of not eating and didn’t want that to happen again, and I didn’t think about what I gave up for lent. Anyway, was it a sin ? And even if it’s not, do any of u think there’s something I can do to make it up? Thanks!

If I am wrong on anything here, someone please correct me. Here is how I understand everything.

If you simply made a mistake there is no sin. Since Friday was the solemnity of St Joseph we were not required to abstain from meat.

If I understand everything correctly, when we give up something for lent this is a personal practice, there is no sin involved if we don’t follow through.

I have messed up in the past, I get half way through a meal and then realized, its Friday and I am eating meat!

If it was accidental then it is no sin.

By the way apart from giving up meat on Fridays during Lent and fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday everything else is voluntary. Therefore if you decide to give up bread and chocolate for Lent but decide to break that it is not a sin because it is not an obligation.

It has happened to me, too, mostly because my son is not Catholic, and he will ask for something for supper on a Friday, and it hits me later that it was Friday. I, too, try to be conscious of not eating meat on Fridays. I will then spend more time reading scripture or in prayer.

But, Friday was the Solemnity of St. Joseph. I did choose to take a ‘break’ and celebrate his day. But, I also went to Mass and Stations of the Cross.

You certainly have committed no sin, but, I am sure God would not mind a few more moments of your time!

Happy Lent! Easter Vigil - 2 weeks from today!!! 🙂
